As the title suggests my girlfriend is going to Turkey and since I am no longer unemployed I was thinking of sending a bunch of money with her to buy shaving gear for.

I tried searching but couldn't find a similar thread, so my question is; what should I have her bring back? Except for, hopefully cheap, Derbys..

Thanks in advance!

Blades & more blades.
Alum & various sorts of creams are dirt cheap.
And ARKO :tongue_sm
It's easy to find a nice barber shop that does straight shaving too, but that might not be for her

Thanks for your reply..

So blades are cheap in Turkey? Are there any other blades aside from Derbys worth trying?

IMO Perma-Sharps are among the best there is.
And Rapiras

Yes, Perma-Sharps are good and more expensive to obtain here in the West. Drumming up some my be more worthwhile than Derbys.

About Rapiras YMMV, those are the worst blades I have ever tried; hands down. I didn't manage to get one decent shave with them. Fortunately I bought only one pack of 10 pcs, to try them out first.
Arko creams and balms are fine products, and extremely cheap in Turkey.

Also check out the Pe Re Ja brand of eau de toilette which is widely available. Smells like the (excellent) GFT from Trumper, but for a fraction of the price.

Thank you fir your replies!

Blades and Arko? Is that it? I thought Turkey was a good country for buying shaving supplies and it turns out the entire country is walking around smelling like Arko.. Man I'm disappointed!

How about straights and DEs? Brushes I guess are all synthetic because of their religion, right? I mean at least they're cheaper on like Proraso and stuff? (Here a tube of Proraso will set you back about $14.) What about the menthol version of Palmolive?

Bah, pull a Bordain; go off-road, delve a little deeper and check out the little stuff.

...Or not. I just recall the way my family took trips.... I still have memories of the day my dad and I took a detour through the Bronx on our way to Maine to rendezvous with my mother. Or southern Chicago.... Good times... good times...

Permasharp blades are great. Worth buying from Turkey.
Derbys are not worth it. Not that great, and can be found easily.

I visit Turkey not infrequently, and one thing that's sort of shaving related and which is a big part of my daily ablution is a peshtamel. This is a Turkish cotton wrap used in hammams (steam baths) by men and women alike, to wrap around the waist.

Last visit to Istanbul, I picked up three high quality peshtamel(s). They are very thin cotton, so they dry quickly, and are designed to wrap around the waist once out of the shower or bath. They are made of very a generous size, so even someone with my non-swimmer's build can get a peshtamel wrapped one and half to almost two times around the waist once out of the shower, unlike towels that don't seem to make it around my waist with room to knot.

I don't like to shave naked, and most sighted creatures prefer I do not either. I find a dressing gown or housecoat to be too warm most days. The peshtamel is much better than wrapping a towel around the waist, because it is longer and wraps without constantly coming undone, and the thin fabric dries and you don't feel wet and clammy.

First thing I do once out of the shower is to wrap my peshtamel around my waist, then I being the lathering, shaving, lathering, wash, alum block............use a peshtamel once and you'll see. Its a gotta-have item that certainly won't break the bank.

Here's an example. http://www.sukoleksiyon.com/

Never been to Turkey, but I think horsehair brushes might be something to check out.

Well I guess I'll leave it at her buying 100 Derby, 100 Perma-sharps and a horse hair brush then.. And maybe that peshtamel as well!
