Hi everyone!

I recently picked up a Merkur HD, some Proraso shave, and some Feather blades. I already had a AoS shave brush that I had been using with a standard catridge razor before I decided to switch over to DE.

My first shave was with the Merkur blade that came with my razor, and it was pretty decent. I think I need to work on building a better lather, and I think I need a new brush as mine is sort of falling apart. Even so I got a decent shave with only 1-2 cuts on my neck.

My second shave was with the Feather blades and...wow. At first I didn't even think the blade was cutting, it was almost "skipping" across my skin they were that sharp. I had major issues on my neck area, to the left and right of my adam's apple is where I have issues with DE shaving. I've been doing a standard "down" pass like in mantic's videos, but should I try going with the grain in that area? I really cut myself up when I tried going straight down.

The good thing is that even though I cut myself, I don't have any irritation. A splash of cold water and my AoS post-shave lotion (looking for new/better post shave!) seemed to cool it off pretty well.

I still have to work on my blade angle, but so far I'm liking the DE shaving world. Just thought I'd stop by and say hey!

Welcome to the B&B!

Try going "with the grain" on your first pass before going against the grain. Everyone's face is different so you can't always just do like someone else.
Don't worry, it'll get better as you gain more experience and confidence too. :thumbup1:

Keep at it don't give up. I would suggest getting a blade sampler from one of the vendors such as west coast shaving. I found in my case that Merkurs did not cut well for me and the Feathers were too sharp. So it would be good idea to find the blade brands that cut your whiskers the best and give you the best consistent, comfortable shaves.

I also go against the grain however if I feel pulling tugging or pain then I change the direction slightly towards across the grain. I found that little by little your technique will get better and you can take care of those problem areas under the neck.

Welcome to B&B. It might be an idea to stick to WTG passes until you feel comfortable with your prep and technique. They'll both get better pretty quickly.

Welcome aboard! As for aftershaves, Tabac splash is great and not too pricey, and Clubman is cheap, effective, and classic. Enjoy!

I use witch hazel or AOS Sandalwood or Lemon aftershaves. Witch hazel is about as cheap as it gets, AOS is a bit more expensive, but u probably know that, having an AOS brush... Welcome to the B&B! Glad to have you with us!
