View Full Version : What did Gillette call the Fatboy?

I love this razor- mine has a D3 date code which translates as third quarter 1958 just like me. But I kinda doubt Gillette was looking for a retro 50's name at the time. Or did they just call it an adjustable razor? :confused1

I think it was just called the Gillette Adjustable - it was the first of its kind, and they even had a little magnifier built into the lids of the original cases to highlight the whole adjustability aspect. There were gold plated versions marketed as Aristocrats, but other than that, I think they were pretty plain-jane about it.

It seems like naming was either hit or miss with Gillette razors... "Aristocrat" and "SuperSpeed" sure do stay in the memory more than "Tech," "New" or "Pocket" :D

Actually, the gold ones were marketed as "Executive"

The gold slim adjustables were marketed as "Aristocrat".

I thought the Model 195 was specific to the adjustable that had the adjuster knob at the bottom of the handle as opposed to the top.

Actually as Goosemeplease said, the 195 Adjustable was mentioned in the paperwork that came with the Traditional Gillette 1-9 Adjustable that we refer to as the "Fat Boy". It referenced the $1.95 price according to Krumholz, "The Complete Gillette Collectors Handbook."

The 195 Adjustable with the adjustment dial near the bottom of the handle is of course much sought after and rarely seen (darn it).

What years were the Fatboys in production? Was it only about 10 years or so? Were all the adjustables Slims after that?

Yeah, I've looked at that before, it says in 1959 adjustable TTO w/ short thick handle so I assumed that is when Fatboy production started. But there is no clear end of production. In 1963 it says adjustable gets long thin handle, but I didn't know if that meant in addition to the Fatboy or it replaced the Fatboy.

I assumed they were in production longer than '59-63, that just doesn't seem like much time considering the amount that are still around today.
