So you are at the bar and you want to order a mix drink. What do you order?

:a54:

Right now mine would be a 7&7. But I'm looking to try something new.

I always enjoy a good vodka tonic or maybe a nice martini (gin, of course).

Gin and tonic sometimes as well...boodles is very nice, but I think tanq makes the nicest gin&tonic due to the heavy juniper flavor of the tanq.

Boodles is great. If you get a chance try Plymouth or Tanqueray 10, a bit dirty with Anchovy olives...Is it 5:00PM yet?:a54:

Winter, scotch & soda; summer, gin fizz; late evening, rusty nail.

Or else I'll be adventurous and pick something random!!

I don't often order mixed drinks in bars, anymore, because they usually use inferior ingredients and they almost always screw them up.

However, when I see a cocktail I want, I make an effort to learn how to make it, correctly, for myself. Some of my current favorites are the martini (gin, of course  ), the Old Fashioned, the Manhattan, and the Sazerac.

In the summer, I also enjoy highballs made with Perrier or, sometimes, ginger ale.

Depends on the weather....

Summer= traditional margherita (not the sweet, frozen stuff)
Fall/Spring = mango margherita
Winter or special occasion = 7&7 or rye & ginger

Can't beat a well-made margarita, but on occasion I like a White Russian or Long Island Iced Tea.

EDIT-Upon returning, I see that I've forgotten my beloved mojitos! Egads!

The one and only Cuban Mojito.

1.5 - 3 oz 3 year old Havana Club rum
4-6 mint leaves
1 tsp. sugar
1 tsp lime juice
Angostura Bitters

Put sugar and mint leaves in bottom of dry tumbler. Grind very well with pestle (the sugar helps break up the leaves). Add lime juice, rum, and heavy dash of angostura bitters, 3 rocks. Top tumbler with club soda. Enjoy.

When it comes to spirits, I prefer vodka first, with gin coming in a close second.

When out at the bar and I'm not feeling a beer, I can't go wrong with a vodka sour, greyhound (vodka and grapefruit juice), or gin and tonic.

After I posted this, I thought to myself, "Hey! It's friday night, the fiancee is out with the girls, and I've got a chilled bottle of Smirnoff in the freezer, lemons and limes in the fridge, and a bottle of Schweppes Lemon Sour Soda in the fridge...why didn't I put 2 and 2 together earlier!?!"

I was thinking either a G&T or Bloody Mary, but the Mojito is great too. Problem is I've never had a good one since my two week vacation in Cuba. The key word in Havana is subtle:

break the mint stalk with a spoon,
add unrefined cane sugar (dirty sugar) and a squeeze of lemon,
stir and then fill glass with ice cubes,
add your rum of choice (three year is good),
top up with soda water,
finish with a few drops of bitters.

Leave to infuse for a few minutes before enjoying to maximum benefit. This version is delicate and very pleasant. The cocktail bars in London all mash up too much mint and fill the glass with crushed ice making the drink too brutal.

I find the Bloody Mary equally variable. I won't give any recipe here for fear of starting a similar debate on the best way to make.

I used to love a Campari and soda, but then I discovered that it wasn't kosher. Damn. All those beetles crushed to make it so red. It has a great flavour, so dry, so bitter, so great before a meal. Never again, sadly.

So, I'd suggest a G&T. Tanquaray gin. Schweppes Tonic. Ice. Lime. That's it. If you prefer a different gin, tonic, or citrus fruit that's fine.

Gin and tonic or gin fizz, made with Tanqueray of course.

In the summer months out on the boat, nothing beats a good Bloody Mary.

Hey Doc, maybe there's hope. According to a couple of websites here in the US, there's a version of Campari that's bottled in Israel that is certified as kosher. Don't know if its availabe in the UK, but maybe on a future trip you could pick up a supply.

My favorite is Jack & Coke.

Mojitos, Sangria, and Stonewalls are my runners up. I can't help it, Jack & Coke is so sweet that it's like liquid candy.

Thanks for the 'head's up' -- they are probably produced in Italy with a different red colour under supervision. I'll get some somehow (brother-in-law in Israel, from NY or FL, or even maybe from Italy direct?)

So you are at the bar and you want to order a mix drink. What do you order?

Winter: a nice steaming mug of coffee, with Splenda and Half 'n Half
Summer: a large glass of iced coffee, with Splenda and Half 'n Half

I'm my own "Designated Driver", so I only drink alcohol at home.

Guy walks into a pub with a roll of macadam under his arm, and says "I'll have a pint, and one for the road."

Mine is the 'Brass Monkey'.

Now, I know there is in fact a well known concoction called a brass monkey, but it's not the Brass Monkey that I reference. The father of one of my best friends, the late Joseph Collins, rest his soul, invented it. It is properly made with Makers Mark and unsweetened grapefruit juice stirred with nothing other than a fork. The fork part is very important for reasons known only to the cosmos. The ratio of scotch/juice starts somewhere around 1/1 at the beginning of the night, becoming a divide by zero error sometime later. Now, it may sound a bit harsh, and it is true that many people don't go back for a second, but it grows on you. It is only lightly sweet, but they go down nice and 'do the job' so to speak.

Further, it makes any drink excepting scotch neat, look like a cranberry spritzer. Gin and tonic even bows to this caveman drink.

Oh my favourite bourbon, and I have to try this drink now. Gives me a good excuse to go buy a new bottle of it, haven't had any now for quite a while.

Bombay and Tonic

Plymouth is the original gin and I definately rate it but Bombay Sapphire is my favourite.

Other than that it's got to be Sauza Gold Commerorativo Tequila and fresh clementine juice.

I'll play the role of resident barbarian and confess to enjoying frozen margaritas. El Tesoro and Cointreau- can't beat it.

And Campari isn't kosher? Never would have guessed. Then again, I've been known to argue that pork parmigiana should be kosher.

My father had a Jewish buddy who would go out for a 'nice piece of meat' every now and then. Must have been light colored beef or something... Don't ask, don't tell policy.

Half a pint of traditional cask ale in a pint glass, topped up with.................

Another half of the same

The same method (in smaller quantities )works equally well with The Macallan

As much as I'd sometimes like to have a classy go-to mixed drink, mine is still captain and diet. The diet (which I never drink on it's own) I find to be far superior than classic coke...cuts the sweetness of the captain.

I've been known to tote around a 1/2 gallon and some diet coke whenever I head to a party...I mean, at $19 a half gallon, how can you go wrong?

I enjoyed the 30 year old scotch and water, hold the water comment. Very funny :thumbup1:

Right now i'd have to say one of my favourites is CC and dry with lime. Canadian Club and dry ginger ale with a slice of lime which has been lightly muddled under the ice. Fantastic
