Last year, I decided to compare different razors, and post about the experience, Here is the thread: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=99005
I figured it might be interesting to do it again, but with some different razors.
This year, I have the DE89L, made by Edwin Jagger, and the Open Comb Micromatic. I will include the Barber Pole versions of the Slant and Open Comb razors. I am probably going to include a vintage Gillette or two.
I am going to start on July 1st with the Micromatic, and if anyone wants to join in, they are welcome to.
1. GEM Open Comb Micromatic (Ted Pella PTFE)
2. 1912 type GEM (Ted Pella PTFE)
3. Merkur Barber Pole Open Comb (12C) (Red Personna)
4. Edwin Jagger DE89L (Feather)
5. Gillette Tuckaway (Derby)
6. Gillette Red Tip TTO (Astra)
7. Gillette SLIM Adjustable (Astra)
8. Merkur Futur (Dorco ST 301)
9. Merkur Barber Pole Slant Bar razor. (Red Personna)
10. Schick Injector
You might be thinking, why not use the same make of blade throughout? The answer, at least in my case, is that I have found some blades work better in some razors than others.

For many reasons, and in no particular order:
1 - To compare different razors and blades under somewhat controlled conditions.
2 - By posting information on they shaves go to help members considering which new razors they want to try. Yes, plural.
3 - It's fun and interesting to compare how different razors shave.
4 - To help determine how many good shaves I can get out of one blade.
5 - To see what difference, if any, a year makes.
Tomorrow morning, a chrome open comb micromatic with a ted pella blade starts things off.

Ok, more than 12 hours after the shave there is no 5 O'Clock Shadow. I'm still BBS in many places, but stubble is beginning to appear along the jawline and parts of the neck.
Perhaps I applied too much pressure, but the OCMM bit me a few times, especially the last pass when I went against the grain. Still, a very very close shave leaving the skin very smooth.

This is my very first shave with my recently-acquired gold Micromatic. After 12 hours, there is still no 5 O'Clock shadow anywhere, just the feel of stubble on my chin and along my jaw line.
This was a big change from my usual Merkur Vision. The razor felt light and puny in my hands, and grip and balance were not as intuitive as newer models. After making adjustments, I applied as little pressure as possible, letting the razor do the work. The audible feedback was amazing--like strong amplification. I found I was using frequent short strokes to chase the sound, and it helped me get an extremely close shave, with only a little irritation noticeable when I applied my alcohol-based A/S.
Overall, I was amazed at the quality of the shave from a razor that's been around for 80 years, and has weathered that time so well.

My Micromatic continues to give excellent results, though I am noticing that the first pass is dragging noticeably more each day, to the point where I am not sure it will actually accomplish its job. But it does!
Now that I'm getting used to it, my shaves have actually gotten better. It is so much more maneuverable than my long handles, that my technique has improved, and my problem areas are now getting closer and smoother shaves than with my Vision and Sledgehammer!

I would have to classify this morning's shave as the best I've ever had. Not 100% BBS, but darn close to it! even my problem area over the end of my lips got the closest I've ever experienced.
The razor (I've only used one blade for six shaves) is showing signs of dulling. First pass was rough, and I found I needed a lot more short strokes to get the job done, but it worked fine. A little more burning noticeable when I applied Booster's.

My very first completely BBS shave! After seven months, I finally got what I've been looking for.
For my last shave with my Micromatic for a while, I put in a new blade and tried to capitalize on a week's worth of learning...with a perfect shave as the result! I did three passes, with a quick touch-up, and even my problem areas got a smooth shave.
I've been waiting for this day for a while, and am a llittle surprised that my best shave to date came by an 80-year old SE razor. What a great tool when used correctly.
During the entire week, I did not get any cuts, nicks or weepers. I did, however, feel some stinging when I applied Booster's today.

My very first shave with my Gem 1912. It did a very good job, but was not as intuitive to use as the Micromatic. I had difficulty finding and maintaining the proper blade angle, and relied on the sound of whiskers being cut as my main guide. I found it challenging to maintain the angle.
I did get a small nick under my nose for a momentary lack of attention, and the shave required a full fourth pass, but the results were very near BBS--with some light stubble on my neck. There was almost no irritation when I applied Booster's.
Overall, a DFS. I think there is a learning curve for me with this razor.

I tallied up the results for the OCMM, and out of 50, it has an average score of 46.625. It would be higher if some of the shaves didn't take so long.
Today I shaved with an British made Ever-Ready 1912 model.. A very close, smooth, comfortable shave, and a full report will follow later.
If anyone is curious as to the order... this provides a fairly direct comparison of the OCMM with the 1912 type.
Almost all the Open Combs are grouped together, with the exception of the Tuckaway, which follows the DE 89L. That sequence is to compare two types, and old versus modern.

I got a decent shave as the result of scratching at areas that SOUNDED rough. Holding the head almost flat against my face approximated the appropriate angle, but sound again was the best guide.

I must hit a time warp between the 2nd and 3rd passes because that's what takes the longest time.
This was the second shave and it was better than the first. The 1912 demands a different type of attention and the angle is just off the face - you can tell by the sound when you have hit the sweet spot.
There was some definite sting from the Clubman, but not as severe as I was expecting. Even now, well more than 12 hours after the shave, I would stay I am at least DFS.

I'm not sure if I am describing the same thing, but I have noticed that wher I can not see any stubble, the blade will continue to cut it. It will seek and destroy whiskers with a vengeance,
But the proper blade angle is the key. I have found that by just lifting the head slightly, instead of it being flat I get the best results.

I let the audio feedback tell me where to concentrate. My strokes were short compared to my modern razor, and I did a lot of constant touching up as I went, but the shave went quickly and without irritation.
The shave was pretty good all over. I've had better. This will never be a favorite tool of mine, but it's been an interesting experiment. Tomorrow, I'll replace the handle with a longer one to see if it helps with blade angle.

First impressions about this razor is that is deadly. There is a tremendous amount of blade exposure!
The second thing is how incredibly light this razor is. It feels like you're holding a feather.
So how does it shave? Whiskers cower before it. It was one of the smoothest shaves I've had. I took it very easy and was very careful. There was no blood for the first (WTG) or second (XTG) pass. But on the third and final pass, on the left side of the neck there appeared a few weepers that to an innocent bystander would have been indicative of an attack by a swarm of baby vampires. They did seal and heal quickly, though.
The audible feedback there is there, but not as loud as with the SE's, Futur, or even the HD/Barber Pole Slants.

More than 12 hours since the end of the shave and still clean and smooth.
An outstanding shave, by any measure.
There were only a few scattered weepers which sealed quickly. I still believe I can feel the blade flex as it cuts the hairs, especially on the against the grain cuts.

Yesterday, I received such a close shave I thought I might be able to skip a day. This morning I thought it might even be a one pass shave.
It was actually a three pass shave, including touchup, and I am pretty sure the whiskers were regenerating as I was shaving. Again the effect, even at this late hour is still mostly smooth.

I was sporting what is now a two day growth, but honestly the Slant left me with a passable shave even without shaving on Sunday, which was the Feast of St. James.
So today, I used the Open Comb Barber Pole with a fresh Red Pack Personna, and of course it had to be TOBS St. James shave cream. It took a little longer than I expected but I got a great shave. BBS, smooth, and long lasting. Even now there is no trace of 5 O'Clock Shadow.

I got a late start with the 12C because I couldn't give up my Vision 2000 for a few days.
The 12C, with a new Red Pack Persona, gave me an OK shave. Once again I had some difficulty maintaining the proper blade angle, which seemed to vary from too little to too much. Next time, I'll stop trying so hard--that usually works out better for me.
The shave was irritation free, but not the closest I've had. There was little audio feedback to help guide my strokes.

Booster's usually has a very light sting, but today there was no alcohol burn. The shave today was very smooth, and very close. It was a tad long, but thoroughly enjoyable experience.
If more than 12 hours have elapsed since the shave and there is no semblance of 5 O'Clock Shadow and for all intents and purposes one is still smooth, then it was a very good shave,

I've been told that the DE 86 has the same shaving head as the DE 89L and it qualifies for this week.
I was quickly reminded why this is the least-favorite razor in my collection. I assumed the blade was still sharp, since I almost never use it, but the first three passes accomplished very little. So I put a new Red Pack in and repeated the shave with four additional passes.
I remember clearly why less-aggressive razors are largely ignored by me. I'll try again tomorrow and see if I get better results.

I am learning a lot as the result of participating in this shave-off. I've confirmed some of my earlier biases about razors and blades, but have also learned that some of my opinions were just plain wrong. More about this at the end of this year's experiment.
One theme that is coming through is that I seem to get better shaves with more aggressive razors. Case in point: my Edwin Jagger.
As comfortable as this is to use--the most irritation-free I can remember--it just doesn't seem to shave as close or remain as durable as others. I will try again tomorrow.
The shave was absolutely irritation free, but not the closest I've had, nor did it seem to last more than a few hours.

I think it was the reaction of the two metals, silver and steel. I have an Astra Keramik in the Red Tip for tomorrow.

This was the last shave with the Tuckaway during the shave off. It did not feel like the blade was cutting much, and the usual problem areas with this razor - the jawline and the neck around the ears took considerable effort to shave,
I was surprised by how badly corroded the blade got, almost as if it wasn't stainless steel.

Yesterday was the first shave with the Red Tip, and it has a fresh Astra Keramik blade.
There was some blood on the lower lip, and in general I did get a good shave, but it just barely lasted the work day
The audible feedback was unusual, in that in some areas, notably the lower lip and around the chin was much higher than the cheek area.

I did take it very slowly this morning, and did not rush anything. The result was a shave that took considerably longer, but also lasted longer.
My standard is the 12 hour shave. If the shave last 12 hours, it gets a 10 rating for closeness. The Micromatic, and the Open Combs with the exception of the Tuckaway all easily exceeded that standard. Today was the first day the Red Tip came close to the standard set by those razors.

Noah,
I'm not sure there is a secret.
I have a thick, dark, fast growing stubble. When shaving with electrics I would get 5 O'Clock Shadow at 9 AM. I consider myself to have sensitive skin since the multiblades would always irritate my neck.
I do tend to use short, quick strokes and rinse the blade out often while shaving, but I doubt that extends the serviceability of the blade.

Yes, I did. The blade looked far worse in the photos than in actuality. There was no rust, just a lot of soap scum, which may have been a protective film. :001_rolle
But how was the shave? It was not as smooth as the previous shaves; there was certainly a degradation in the blade's ability to effortlessly mow down whiskers.
But it did cut them down. And the goal today was a two day shave. I really don't want to shave tomorrow, and would like at least one day off from shaving.
The net result is I think I may have succeeded. I am very smooth right now, except for one small spot along the jawline.

I have always been afraid to crank up my adjustables that high. Maybe I should try it out.
You know, when I started shaving with a Slim, I set the razor to "3" and just forgot about it, to try to keep things on a level playing field. I figured, "I've got a rather light and fine beard, so why risk getting cut up needlessly?" I got fine shaves (DFS+) with minimal irritation, and so just stayed at 3 and didn't give it more thought for 6 months or so.
In the past few weeks, though, I've begun experimenting with more aggressive settings (I've gone all the way up to 8), and to my surprise I'm getting both a closer shave and less overall irritation than with a milder setting. Lately, I've been gravitating to about a "7" as best for me.
My guess is that, now that my technique has settled down and I can safely handle more blade exposure, I am removing more beard with each stroke, so I need less touchups. The result is a paradox: my skin feels less irritated with a setting of 7 than it did at 3.:thumbup1:
Ray, give that adjustable a click or two towards the wild side - you may be surprised at how good your face will feel afterwards.

Sadly, I don't own a Futur. Faced with sitting this week out, I decided to try shaving with the closest thing I own--my Vision. In the spirit of Lou's "Slim-at-9" experiment, I decided to try it wide-open, set at "V" (with a new Feather blade).
I did this to play out my fascination with aggressive DEs, and I lived to tell about it.
My usual prep, minus coffee, to ensure a steady hand. At first, I was so cautious I was afraid to let the weight of the razor do its work, and tried applying NEGATIVE pressure--until I relaxed after the first pass.
Shave completed: no blood, barely detectable irritation in two small areas when I applied Booster's, and BBS all over!

Shaving with the Futur has been very enjoyable this week. The shaves have been as close as an SE, but quicker, and the audible feedback has been just as good.
The Futur and the Open Comb Micromatic (OCMM) both cut whiskers with a throaty growl, the equivalent of a double barreled carburated V8, while other razors cut whiskers and the audible feedback is, "more refined". I think I wake the neighbors by the sound the whiskers make as they are being cut.

Blood Everywhere! I had to use a styptic. This was pure user error. And it was the kind of thing that the very second you're doing, you realize you shouldn't be. I put too much pressure on the downstroke on the upper lip, and the blade hit with a vengeance. Immediate reaction, besides the usual salty language was to check for red stains. Those didn't immediately appear, but when they did, I hit a gusher!
Aside from that little incident, the shave went well. I was smooth and clean shaven all day, even now.
I should retire a blade that tasted that much blood, but I'm hoping it's been sated.

This was the first shave with the RPP, and it was a very smooth, close, comfortable shave. It was, in retrospect a better shave than the first shave with the Dorco ST 301's. This may be due to better practice, or having less stubble, or both.

I am glad I purchased this razor, thanks to this thread. I hated the Merkur Progress (sold it) so I had low expectations. For some reason (again this thread) I set the razor at 6 on the first pass and it sounded great. The best feedback of any razor I have used including the Gem OC and the Slants. At the highest setting the Futur is loud.
I was also amazed at how easy it is to shave with the razor set at 6; I didn't have to fight to find the right angle. Next shave I am going to leave it at 6.
Bottom line I had a BBS without single nick after three passes. I rate harshly when it comes to comfort and yet this razor/blade combo received a 10.

My second PERFECT SHAVE! What can I say?
These are the results I'd always hoped for but never got. Part of it was my technique needed to develop. I had to set aside my 39C slant for two months because I just couldn't handle it without drawing blood. Part was finding the supporting cast: brush, blade, cream/soap and prep. Part was building an objective trial of the razors in my collection. But part was finding the right lead player--my Merkur Futur. All of the above I owe to B&B and this thread in particular (thanks Lou)!

I shaved this morning with a two day growth. I got up early and too my time with a very light touch. I was lucky in that a friend just returned from Poland with 10 tubes of Wars. :w00t: I gave him one as he was very curious about why I wanted a product that has been made in Poland since before WWII. So, I got to start the week off with a great shave and the great scent of Wars.:001_tt1:
How was the shave? Outstanding! Still smooth and nearly BBS after more than 12 hours. I can't see any stubble, nor is there sign of 5 O'Clock Shadow, but I can feel the whiskers starting to poke out,

Still no noticeable change in the quality of the shave. Just the barest hint of possible dragging (I might be imagining it).

Another personal record. Today was really hot (around 100 degrees), so I went with cold water, ice cubes, Proraso Pre, and Proraso shaving cream. I rinsed my face between passes with an ice cube. After three passes and minor touch up I had a BBS in under 20 minutes.
I have never been able to get this many comfortable shaves out of a blade.

I am still incredulous at how clean shaven I am, even now. I can barely feel any stubble, even along the jaw line.

This was a bit rushed, not withstanding I still took over 20 minutes. This was the 9th shave with the blade and it did feel a little rough, not as smooth as the previous 8 shaves.
Yet 12 hours after the shave, no 5 O'Clock Shadow and nearly BBS. There will be at least one more shave with this razor and blade combo.

I experimented a little with my prep by adding a thin layer of Cremo to my wet face, followed by Proraso cream. I then face-lathered as usual. It provided a thick, slick based and a very comfortable shaving experience.
The Iridium blade seems perfect for this razor, as it was for the Futur. A wonderful shave. I like the feel of the 39C in my hand and on my face. It's well-balanced, secure and easily maneuverable.

That Super Iridium was so smooth, and glided so easily I did not feel any of the nicks until the evidence appeared. It liked blood as much as a Feather blade; a blade one member described as pure concentrated evil.
Nonetheless, it was a very close shave, resulting in BBS, and lasting over 12 hours. Judging by feel alone, it feels at this time like a closer shave than the last Futur shave, and certainly at least comparable to the best I received while using the Futur.
Perhaps, it was the first shave. Perhaps it was the bottom of the bowl of the TOBS. Perhaps it was a combination of other factors, but I definitely felt the Clubman sting today.

It was a remarkably close shave. There is no evidence of a whisker evern thinking of peeping out at this time.
But, oh what a bloodthirsty little blade! It rivals the Feather.

This shave was done on Saturday afternoon. It is only now, 16 hours after the shave that I am beginning to feel any kind of stubble. I wouldn't even characterize it as a 5 O'Clock Shadow at this point.
It was close, and effortless, but not without a small price to be paid in blood. And the nicks were all in the last pass; the Against The Grain pass and the touchup where I really go after those hard, tough whiskers.
There will probably be no shaving today.

Another fantastic shave. It's been 12 hours, and I'm still BBS on 75% of my face. No 5 o'clock shadow anywhere.
The Iridium blade is perfect for me. It glides, it works and it leaves my face intact--if I use zero pressure throughout! Effortless. Feathers are a fraction sharper, but they seem to catch and irritate no matter how light the pressure. YMMV applies, as always.
I found these blades by reading Squire's post on another board: SMF :: View topic - Squire's Blade Reviews (http://www.shavemyface.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=29705&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0). I recommend this post to those who have not yet found the blade that works best for them.

I understand there is a saying in Germany, "He who tastes blood, gets to like it." This Iridium Blade has certainly developed a taste for it! It was nothing that needed a Styptic Pencil, but there were lots of little red dots.
The shave? Incredibly smooth, long lasting as now, more than 12 hours after shaving, I am still mostly BBS.
Once again, like the Futur I have to note that this razor is very good at getting rid of the "invisistubble", the whiskers that you can hear it cut, buit are not visible.

Terrific shave, and long-lasting. My concentration lapsed for a fraction of a second, though, and I got a nick as a result. Not bad enough to need alum, and the only spot I noticed mild stinging when I applied Tabac.

I made the lather as described in threads here, since I had heard MWF can be pretty tough to lather. I didn't have a problem. Normally, I don't drain as much water out of the brush as I do for MWF.
It's not the Slant's thirst for blood, but the Super Iridium, and it has apparently been sated.

I stuck with what worked yesterday, but this time I had showered the night before.
I had one of the closest, smoothest shaves ever. It is only now, more than 14 hours after shaving that I am even beginning to feel some stubble along the jawline. Pretty much BBS everywhere else.
The MWF may have also sated the blade's thirst for blood.
Although, I have to say, when I awoke this morning, I thought I did not need to shave. Then when I started, I received the audible feedback that said even though I could not see the stubble, the razor was mowing it down. And it did, quite efficiently.

One of the unexpected by-product of participating in this forum seems to be that I may have picked up shaving skills without really thinking about it.
Case in point: my Sledgehammer does a better job than it did a few months ago. Part may be that I discovered Iridium blades recently, but my instincts tell me that the concentration required to adapt to new razors helped me pick up a lot of good experience in a relatively short time.
Bottom line: I am happier with my equipment and results than I've ever been.
Today's shave was terrific, smooth and long-lasting. No irritation at all.

I obtained the mergress, but I should've waited for the posting on the Futur :(
I have to say that out of the three (including the Red Tip) I've gone back to the EJ. Something about it just seems to work very well for me. The Red Tip was nice, much "faster" shave, but I seemed to get a closer shave with the EJ. I would put the EJ ahead of the RedTip, and even the Mergress at 4 1/2. Something about the EJ, it always seems to give a comfortable shave with minimal irritation.

This was after showering so the stubble was well hydrated. The net result was an extremely close shave, staying at BBS levels for well over 12 hours.
