Can I ask another real newbie question... how does one use a shaving scuttle?

There are two kinds. The very old kind, when water was heated on the kitchen stove, had a large opening on the side where you filled it with water, and on the top a cup-shaped depression with holes in the bottom, where the shaving soap rested. You filled it with the hot water, plunked your brush into the hole in the side, and went to your shaving place. There, you extracted the brush, worked it over the soap to charge it with soap, and built the lather on your face. The holes in the cup let the water drain away from the soap so it didn't just melt away.

The Moss Scuttle consists of a small bowl stuck above a larger bowl. You fill the large bowl with hot water, and it keeps the smaller bowl warm. The idea is that you put your brush in the smaller bowl between passes to keep the lather in the brush nice and warm. Some use the small bowl as a lathering bowl, others do not, but the basic idea is keeping the small bowl hot to warm the lather.

Hope this helps.

You bet Michael,

I just read a post where a guy is so appreciative of our forums that he gave away a full starter kit. Your Later On site has been a tremendous service for me. You are a gifted writer.

No, not really.

Just kidding. :w00t:

See, today's the first time I hear of this "scuttle" thing. Now I have to get one.

My Moss Scuttle is finally on the way from Nova Scotia as we speak. Miss Sara e-mailed me yesterday. I have been waiting the prescribed month for her to make my custom scuttle. Can hardly wait, warm lather at last.

I have had my Sara scuttle for about 1 month. It is off the hook. She was prompt in emails. Let us know how you enjoy it.

Are the diameters for both bowls (symmetrical), or just for the bottom bowl (holds more water)? I'm just wondering because it looks like the same price for each. Why doesn't everyone just get a large bowl?

The general idea is that the Moss Scuttle works best if your brush fits snugly into the warming bowl. So those who use a smaller brush like the smaller scuttle.

Actually on the Moss Scuttle, those who like the larger brushes, like the smaller scuttle as the large brushes fill up more of the bowl and stay warmer. I use my 30mm Shavemac in the small one and absolutely love it.

Have fun.
