Shaving Glove

Greeting friends, I would like to share with you my latest shaving acquisition from Ebay. Its is a victorian era shaving glove.

History
During the victorian era shaving with a straight razor could be quite perilous on those chilly winter mornings. Enter the shaving glove, it kept the wearers hand dry and warm so that they could shave safely. See the picture below.

I was fortunate to snag this fine specimen on the bay, I am suprised none of the other knowedable B&B members snapped it up. :001_huh: First time shaving glove users may be put of by the aroma eminating from the glove. Do not be alarmed this is just the smell of shaving history and in my opinion adds to the overall shaving experience.

Although it was originally designed for straight razors as you can see from the pictures it compatible with more recent shaving hardware. Its hard to make out in the photos but there is a hole on the end on the glove which allows you to insert and grip your razor.

Even a toothbrush

Heres a picture of the glove in action just to show it is still functional.

All in all I am happy with this purchase and I highly recommend you try one yourself. This is the best $200 I have spent on wet shaving gear.

Cheer, Len.

PS. Luc you are welcome to put this in the shavewiki

Wow there's always something you find out on B&B !!!:001_smile

That'd be perfect down here in Tassie on a chilly Winter's morning.

Is that the only colour they came in ?

Did they come in Butterscotch ??

I'll be keeping my eyes open for them now and on Ebay.

Did they come in Butterscotch ??:

Funny you should mention that, just like shaving brushes the white ones discolour over time and take on a nice yellow appearance.

LOL!

I just discovered that I have dozens of these over here!
Alas, they don't have an hole (yet)...

I'm gonna make a hole on each one and sell all of them on ebay. For €200 each one, I can make some fine easy money!

I have about a dozen of these! They're not so rare.
I did have two dozen once upon a time but they seem to mysteriously disappear for some reason.

Most of mine have the hole in the end for the razor too. It's a funny thing that smell. Very reminiscent of my feet after a hard days grafting.

Did you ever manage to track down the real collectors gem? The Spongebob limited edition one?

Thanks for this helpful tutorial. There's so little writtn about these quaint accessories that I had to guess how to use mine (found at and estate sale).

I put it on my foot, gripped the razor between my toes and tried to shave, but I find the learning curve too great right now. Getting the right angle while keeping your balance is not as easy as it sounds. :001_rolle

I am laughing so hard right now that tears are running down my cleanly shaven cheeks. I wonder if the 'Shave Sock' was the marketing genius of the Gillette company, a nod of things to come from their ever changing and evolving marketing campaigns. What will they possibly roll out next June? Sure seems that having a shave sock, adds to that addage, "The Best A Man Can Get!".

based on the picture in the op, i'd say the gentleman shaving is also wearing what appears to be a neck warmer.

Hey Len:

I hate to tell you but you got taken. You can buy the same shaving glove at Nordstrom's for only $15 - plus they have a nice gold emblem on the tip.

However, I may buy one so I can hold onto my Merkur Progress.

Is it machine-washable? Maybe you can even use it to remove remaining lather after your shave.
A true stroke of genius and quite the find!

And his straight razors are stored open, with the blade in a mug. :scared: :yikes:

Not sure I'd follow this guys example, although I did find these that I'm kind of fond of;

Apparently for people with really short fingers

I see the glove has developed a fine patina from years of use. They usually came in pairs, one for holding the razor, one for wiping off excess lather.

I'm betting we'll see the mate on eBay any day now.
