Hello everyone, great forum. Lots of awesome advice.

So I was talking about getting a DE razor at work, so for my 30th birthday last week the guys decided to get me one! Knowing my prediliction for getting relatively topnotch gear they decided to get my the 39c (slanthammer) with some feathers.

I used the merkur blade as the feathers sounded a touch to serious for a first ever attempt. I haven't yet received my brush and soap, so went with a shavestick I face lathered by hand.

Given that I hadn't shaved in about a week I have to say I'm impressed. I needed to do a 3 pass effort, and it's not all BBS, but overall I think it went well.

There was a definite tendancy to go for longer strokes, press on the blade and to move the wrist rather than the arm, but I only got one nick and that was pretty minor.

Jumping right in with the slant, I couldn't do that. Welcome and keep it up. You won't go a week without shaving ever again :biggrin1:

Welcome! Glad to know a 39C was OK for you on the first try, as I've only been using a DE for a few weeks and have a 39C on the way.

Welcome to B&B!

Great choice! I've got a 39C Slant "Sledgehammer", it is my go to razor, along with Feather Blades. I get BBS in two passes with it (one wtg, one atg, along with a bit of blade buffing). The combination is hard to beat! :thumbup1:

Thanks everyone! Great welcome :)

I've got my soap and brush, so looking forward to shaving tonight. I got culmak soap and a men-u brush (boar). The brush isn't a fanstatic one, but it was inexpensive, came with a stand and was reasonably rated.

I've ordered some derby blades as I'm a bit hesitant to use the feathers so soon. The merkur blade the razor came with seems alright so far, so I've got a few days until I'll need to swap that out.

I think next I'll look at getting a bowl and maybe a bigger mirror (don't have a proper mirror in the bathroom). I really want to get another brush, but am holding myself back (I have an issue with buying loads of stuff).

It was my friends idea to get the slant and feathers, I probably would have started a bit more slowly ;)

The Derbys are a fine blade. Try the sample packs that are offered the WCS, BlueGoose, and others.

Welcome to B&B.
