First time poster and new wet shaver!
First of all, thanks to everyone for the great posts and an awesome forum community. I have been reading and following for a while now getting myself ready for my big day! It is rare to find such a civilized forum on the interwebs.
Yesterday was my first wet shaving experience. I went to Rasage Poulin and pick up a beginner kit early in the afternoon. A Parker 22R, Semogue Boar Brush, Original Tabac Shaving soap, an alum block, Musgo aftershave, and a pack of every blade he carries. I also bought somo Proraso shaving cream and a Proraso pre-shaving cream the other day at a drug store.
I have watched all of Mantic59's videos on youtube to give myself a good base to learn from. I wanted to give myself a lot of time so I had a nice hot shower at about 3:30 in the afternoon, dropping the brush into a sink full of hot water before I got it. When I got out I used the Proraso pre-shave cream then started to work the Proraso cream into a lather in my mug. I used too much water and ended up with a really diluted, watery cream, and used it anyways ( I am a newbie....). I used a Shark Super Chrome blade and went with the grain for the first pass. I lathered up again and did a 90 degree pass for the second, and then an against the grain pass. I felt I needed another against the grain pass, so I started another mug full of cream and ended up getting a much better, thicker cream. I did my last against the grain pass then some spot touching up. I rinsed with cold water, rubbed the wet alum block on my face and then cleaned up my supplies. Finally I splashed on the Musgo aftershave and I was done.
It is hard to explain, but in such a PC world I hadn't felt like such a man in a long time. I was really proud of my job! A few nicks (2 or 3 tiny ones) but no razor rash and the smoothest shave I have ever had! It's 24 hours later and my face is as smooth is it usually is 10 minutes after scrapping a dull Fusion over my gelled up face!
Tips? Suggestions? Hints? Criticism? I'm open to all (just be nice!).
Thank-you, Thank-you THANK-YOU to all you posters out there!! I hope this leads to a life of smooth, healthy skin and manly self-esteem!
When should I pick up my fist straight razor? HA!
