I'm tired of using these cheap, give away pens that I've accumulated over the years. I want a real pen but I don't need an expensive pen.

I want a pen that writes smoothly, has available refills (perhaps the Rollerball type), looks fairly nice, feels good in the hand, and won't drive me to tears if I lose it.

I have older Cross pen and pencil sets but they're way too skinny for my hand. Plus, the pens never really wrote all that well. I want a pen with some heftiness.

This may not fit into the category of 'fine' writing instrument but I thought you folks my be able to help me out here.

Thanks,
Dan

Believe it or not, Bombay Company has a lot of pens that might fit your qualifications. Check them out next time you are at the mall.

Caran d'Ache Ecridor rollerball or balpoint. Will last a lifetime and are beautiful. Very good refills as well.

If you give us some parameters of what you're looking for, we'll be able to give you better suggestions.

For example - plastic vs. metal, big vs. small, capped vs. retracting, etc.

I really like Conklin Rollerballs around $40, very masculine, I prefer the Glider line. Available online and at Paradise Pens in the mall if you've got one.

The most common ballpoint refill in the US is the Parker. Fairly recently, they came out with a Gel refill that writes like a rollerball but does not dry out. I think it's the most comfortable thing going, and there are thousands of nice, inexpensive ballpoint style pens that it will fit. The only drawback is that the gel refill does not last nearly as long as a ballpoint.

I just found a pen forum. www.fountainpennetwork.com I don't much about it, but I've been lurking them myself trying to gather some information. It seems to have a wealth of info on everything, pen.

I have spent some time browsing around there...alot of info there. Can you believe there is a whole forum dedicated to pens?

The frivolous things some people waste time discussing on line--just unbelievable.

The Lamy Al-star is a great pen for about $30. I love mine, although the ink is too fluid for the Moleskine I have been using as an organizer. For that, I use a Pentel EnerGel needle tip with a 0.5mm ball.

I usually prefer ball points because they don't run as badly a some of the gels and roller ball pens. I hate writing something and then have to air dry it before putting it into a binder or wallet.
