I found something intriguing in my travel pack.. I was emptying it and found my standby razor, a Feather Portable in the process of chemical decay...

Some people on ebay advertise that this item is stainless steel.. I doubt this very much..

Here are the forensic photos

Any opinions on this?:glare:

Do you have any idea what it was exposed to? Did anything else in the bag suffer a similar fate? And have you thought about listing this on eBay as a rare antique?

More proof that DE shaving is greener than cartridges.:)

Honestly, I don`t know what to say about that.

It looks like some kind of plating is bubbling up on the head, so I don't think that part is CRS (corrosion-resistant steel... I don't believe in "stainless steel"). The base plate might show plate bubbling too, but it's hard to tell from the photos.

What else was in the travel bag with the razor?'

Looks to me like an electrical cause

The razors I had with it was untouched.. But they were in their plastic razor storage/disposal container and wrapped in their wax paper protection..

All of them was in a ziplock bag enclosed in a towel.. I attempted to use it 5 weeks ago when I was in the desert.. I really don't want to use my Fatboy like I did last time cause of the fear of damaging the dial and it's components.. My Fatboy is treated like a old Harley..

However unfortunate, this is an interesting occurrence, and an insight into the construction of the portable. From what i can tell, the white metal (potmetal) cap was heated (either chemically or electrically) and melted around two contact points. My suspicion is the terminals on a 9V battery, or possibly the terminals on a rechargeble electric shaver :001_huh:

Isn't that an As New Gillette Fatboy..........ooops sorry this isn't ebay.

Looks more like some more agressive chemical reaction rather than just rust ......specially over just 5 weeks ??? Weird

Perhaps you should send it back to Feather and see what they come up with.

Bluemidknight

I wonder, could it be a anode effect?

but I only heard of a anode effect in wet environments, like soil and water.. Maybe there might have been moister trapped in the ziplock bag and there was a chemical reaction caused by the different metal components of the Feather Portable?
Maybe if I clean it up and take some more pictures.. or does someone have the number to Feather's Forensic department?

What electrical equipment I had on the plane trip was my mp3 and cellphone..
ummm.. I am very uncertain about purchasing another Feather Portable..

Sadly its not a joke, its a mystery to ponder and it concerns me.. A Feather Portable is cheap and replaceable.. I don't want this to happen to my Fatboy..

I'd be more worried that it was caused by something I scraped off my face while using it! :w00t:

If "in the desert" = in the sandbox on CBRNE Ops, then I'd pay closer attention to decon protocol next time over!

Let us know if you find out anything. And sorry for your loss.

Here is the response back from Feather :w00t:
They sound like they have wonderful customer service. :w00t:

Thank you very much for your e-mail dated June 1, 2010 through our website.

First of all, we are sorry for the inconvenience caused with our product.

Regarding the condition of the razor, we could find only one picture of the
corroded razor attached with your e-mail, and we showed that picture to our
quality management team.
According to them, this razor has not been reported to have flaws or weakness
to cause such corrosion during normal usage for shaving purpose.

As we can see in the picture, the razor is corroded so badly, especially in
the top panel made by plated zinc. From the characteristic of this material,
such corrosion could be caused by beeing soaked with strong acid (for example,
chemicals used in acidic bathroom cleaner, etc.) for a long time, but we are
afraid that we cannot be sure about the cause of the corrosion of this razor.

We are sorry for not being very helpful regarding the cause of the trouble,
and it is regrettable to inform you that "Feather Portable" razor has been
discontinued.

In token of our gratitude for your patronage to our product, however, we would
appreciate it if you could allow us to send you sample of our product. We
would appreciate it if you could let us know your address and telephone number
by return, as we need those information for the shipment.

Thank you very much for your understanding, and we are looking forward to
hearing from you.

Best regards,

Uh... so... what in the world was your razor exposed to? :001_huh:

Bluemidknight
06-03-2010, 05:44 PM
After narrowing down the different factors in this investigation.. I concluded the following facts..

Its not the Proraso (same tube used at home and in the field)
No cleaner was used on it at home and in the field

Narrowing the list down..

Two things are different from home and the field..
The water and storing it in a ziplock bag :001_huh:

With a zinc cap, I would guess that your razor became a sacrificial anode. Zinc blocks or rods are used to reduce corrosion of outboard motors in marine environments and in water heaters to prolong the life of the steel tank. The idea is that in these environments there will be corrosion so the zinc parts are put in there so that the chemical reaction (corrosion) will be with the zinc and not the steel parts.

This thing weighs the same weight has my Fatboy..
umm a warning in English in the instruction manuel... "Blades are very sharp use for shaving purpose only."

There are two modes.. apparently.. I thought it was a safety switch and was pointing it down range.. But it locks the head from free moving to lock position.. http://i430.photobucket.com/albums/qq26/bluemidknight/th_IMG00546-20100608-1929.jpg (http://s430.photobucket.com/albums/qq26/bluemidknight/?action=view&current=IMG00546-20100608-1929.jpg)

I am going to agree with you. I have no idea what type(s) of metals and plating are used in a Feather Portable, but my guess is that you had some type of galvanic reaction which caused the corrosion.
