This is my latest little project, another antique store find.
It's manufactured by D.Perez, #142, Solingen steel, 1/2 hollow,, scaled in my own canvas "micarta", ebony pinless wedge. The back is etched "Family Herald & Weekly Star", and the case is marked with that as well.
Scales were broken, and she had a smallish chip at the tip that required a little grinding. I did try to stay true to the original point style, but she still lost about 3/16" in length.
I polished it up pretty well, and then decided I didn't like that shiny brightness, and so I toned it down a bit with a vinegar wash.
Here's some before and after pics. She's now waiting for a honing.

Great save! It's always hard to believe that something looking as beat up as the before pictures can end up as beautiful as the after pictures. :thumbup1:

Thanks guys!
I'm a little dissapointed that the scales turned out as thick as they did; they kinda just engulf that little blade.
I might yet un-pin it and re-shape them to lighten them up. That so called "micarta" was a little funny to work with, the layers were fairly thick and it seemed to sand funny. I didn't want to go too far with the sanding, but I guess i shoulda gone just a bit further.
Oh well, it all just gets chalked up to experience; I'll know better for next time.

Love the blade restore! Super job saving the tip, with that big bite out of the toe to start with...
The only fault, is as you say, the scales came out a bit too big for that blade.

I'm definatley going to send it back to the sander, it'll only cost me a wedge, and another quick finish with CA, all the hard stuff is already done. There are still lots of layers left, and the texture might come out more as I go deeper.
**Anyone recognize the washers?:wink2:**

You could also thin them from the backside (the flat side), which may be easier to control thickness?

Great work!

un-pinned, re-sanded, re-finished, re-assembled....
She looks much better now; the scales are much more in scale (no pun intended) to this pretty old girl.
The one photo shows her up as looking a little plump still, but I think that's just the persective, she's really become a svelt, sexy little thing, even though she's only wearing canvas:wink2:
I managed to do all that without a complete dis-assembly and I was able to keep the same wedge. Refinishing it was a little tricky, I had to be really careful of runs and only do one side at a time but it turned out PDG!
The color came out a lot lighter this time, because I had a clean belt on the sander. The last time it picked up a bunch off dust from sanding the ebony wedge that stained the canvas fibers. My daughter prefered the previous color, and I think I did too. It showed up the texture of the canvas really nicely.... now, not so much.
What'd ya'll think of the improvements?
