Sentiments on Mitchell’s Wool Fat and Williams Mug Shaving Soap

I might very well find myself in a situation where I stand alone on this, but nevertheless…

After reading and hearing a lot of how good Mitchell’s Wool Fat shaving soap is, I finally came around to buy it and try it out myself.
I must say I don’t understand the hype about this, I don’t find it as fantastic as the reviews proclaim it to be.

I’ve tried cold lathering and warm lathering (not hot) of the soap and don’t find much difference in the ability to lather or in the quality of the lather.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying it is a bad soap I just don’t find it to be superior of other hard soaps. It is on level with most quality soaps but in my opinion, others surpass it.

No matter if, it is tallow or glycerine based, I would say most of my other soaps has a slight better ability to lather. The MFW however is very slick and in this area, it is in top of its class.
The scent is a very personally matter, and I must say I’m not a fan of the scent, to me it smells synthetic, and at the moment I don’t think I’ll buy another puck when this one is used up.

Now, as little as I understand the hype for MWF as little do I understand the trashing of Williams Mug Soap. I’ve been so lucky to receive a puck of this soap when I bought a razor on the B/S/T (thanks kopio) and have been trying this soap also.
In my opinion this soap are just as willing to lather up as MWF i.e. I don't find it a difficult job as some apparently do. The lather does however have a tendency to disappear after some time. I’ve found that applying some drops of glycerine helps to prevent this.
The slickness is comparable with that of MWF and I do like the scent better in this soap.

When I compare those two soaps, I find them quite similar, with the exception of the staying power of the lather in the Williams and yet one is highly regarded whereas the other is frowned upon and I don’t know if it is a coincidence but the cheap soap is the one that is dissed.

Something similar is happening to the Arko shave stick, it is cheap and many people won’t even consider trying it – and in my opinion it is one of the best soaps I’ve tried so far, surpassing MWF on all accounts.

But there you go, just another proof of how true YMMV is when it comes to shaving :001_smile

MWF is like Scotch...its an acquired taste I think. I hated it at first but now I love it after muscling through many sucky lathered shaves.

Ya, MWF was sorta of a pain until you hit that sweet spot. It is the most moisturizing soap I have used and for that reason it is SWMBO's favorite soap. Arko is one fantastic soap also.

I have to admit, for the price and performance

MWF vs. Williams, I pick Williams! I'm sold to it after 1 use!

The scent is not as bad as they say!

Exactly.

To me Williams has a soapy/citrus smell whereas I find the scent of MWF "synthetic", and when it comes to slickness they are quite similar.

I am afraid that the pricetag is partly responsible for this, though there is love for both Arko and Williams around here. It is possibly the same kind of sentiment why some guys won't even touch a boar brush.

I agree with you that Arko is a top performer and my guess is it would get much more praise if it was presented in a nice glass or ceramic bowl at, let's say, $15 shipped.....

Harrie, you are probably right, but I am glad they don't do this. Now I can still get great stuff at an incredibly low price.

I have never had a problem lathering MWF, I get a great lather from it and my skin feels great afterwards also. I really enjoy the lanolin that is in it. Sorry it does not seem to work for you.

I may have to try out some Williams when I am in the US though... :w00t:

No, luckily :biggrin1:

Maybe I'm a "shaving bumble-bee", I don't know Williams is bad so I don't know it's a problem
