Bidding on a razor recently, which I won, however I often wonder whether the bidders were all legit, or just someone upping the price to either assist the seller, or perhaps mark up the price of a similar auction, they themselves are having for the same product. The recent Fatboy prices makes one wonder. Well, thank you 1***p, for marking up my cost, from $33.99 to a whopping $115.

You realise theose names are randomly assigned and do not in any way correspond with the true screenname of the bidder..... But if you think it's dodgy send a message to ebay who will check IPs etc. for you.

Were some of those possibly automatic bids?

Some yes, but generally automatic bids bid once per other bid in order to outbid the other.... but they look like someone creeping up bids, generally bids of 1-10 dollars repeatedly looks siuspicious.... Check if it's been relisted usually because the shill has accidentally won.....

SHHH! It`s SWMBO`s username. We must not let her know we purchase shaving supplies. ;)

Yup. I am aware. I could check their recent history and it seems they had 5 and 6 bids on a few shaving items, while all of their recent activity was in the Shaving and Grooming section of Collectibles, so it may have just been an overzealous B&B compatriot.

I have been asking myself the same thing, I have not yet used the bay to bid for razors but SWMBO and I have been bidding on prams for our 8 month old daughter and it never fails to astonish me that the final selling price sometimes corresponds to 80% of the price of a new pram which is a lot considering that you do not get a warranty and you do not get a replacement pram during the time when your own has broken down if this were to happen.

I have seen this before and have wondered, myself. Yeah, if it were me I think I would contact ebay, if not just to find out/have it on record...

I had set a max bid higher than any of those. I knew what I was willing to pay, I was just hoping to not have to;). Luckily, it never reached my max.

The last 4 transactions I have had on ebay have been a nightmare.

The last 2 were about razors.

I was bidding on a very nice straight razor that looked to be in good condition. It was obivious from the pics and description that the seller was either a member of the forums or had much knowledge on razors.

He took the pictures so well that he hid the massive amount of pitting that was only on the back edge. I am working it out now with him.

The other transaction was on a straight razor that looked excellent in the photos. What I got was the razors beat up, dirty, evil twin sister.
The persons swapped out razors and sent me the shitty one. Also charge 8 dollars for UPS postage and it was first class 1.94. Working on this as well.
Again, the person knew what they were talking about in the description, so I think in both cases it was intentional

There's nothing unusual about this at all. The bidder simply wanted to see the minimum he had to pay to be the "winning bidder," and every time he increased it by a certain amount you outbid him.

I've done this myself when there are items I'm hoping to "steal" for a lower cost. It's like gambling--you keep on playing a few bits at a time, hoping you'l win out.

It's also not unusual for a bidder with 11 transactions to do this. After awhile, you learn to simply put in a maximum value that you'll pay and not pay attention to it until the last few minutes of the auction.

Perfectly legitimate strategy.

If you look at the times of the bids, you can see it's the same guy bidding it up every 30 seconds.
With no other bids in between his to justify raising the price, it sure looks like a shill trying to raise the price far above where it would be without him.

I agree with this post. I don't think shilling is going on here. The person doesn't seem to have a lot of experience with bidding, and as Jeff in Boston said, when i first started buying on eBay, I bid in a similiar fashion.

Also, someone else came in at the last moment with a snipe bid of $115.50. {bidder _***d} You would have paid what you paid even if the guy with lotsa bids was not there at all.....

Yes. I forgot about that last minute bid. Like I said, I knew what I was willing to spend, I put in a max that I thought was appropriaten and I will soon be the proud owner of an F4 Toggle.

I don't think you have much of a gripe with mister (11). He is like many ebay bidders. He is looking to others to tell him what an item is worth. Like others said here, you probably bid this way when you only had 11 transactions.

Also, the snipe thing is perfect for avoiding this type of price escalation of the unsure bidders. Only thing, you will be doing the last-second dance with people who are willing to pay. I've seen many items escalate 0 to 60 in seconds. There are few bargains on ebay, and patience is needed to get those.
