I think you'll find that fewer than 1/3 of the folks here use pre-shave oil at all.

I used The Art of Shaving Pre-Shave Oil - Lavender 2 oz once, but honestly saw no better results.
I get close shaves with or without it..
may be the pre shave oil perhaps has something to do with ingrown hairs..

I don't see that it has made a difference in my routine, but I did just start using Proraso pre-shave and I just generally like the feeling of it. However, I am a total newbie and should not be trusted. :biggrin1:

It is not necessary to use preshave oil. However I like to use T&H preshave oil for 'special shaves' as I find I always get an excellent shave when I use it. I'd use it everyday if it wasn't so pricey.
I use Proraso pre/post most days and I am happy with its price and performance.
It is a personal thing. I like preshave products, many don't bother with them. As always YMMV.

i suppose that if you are going to lather up after using it there's not much sense in it because when I have done so it didn't seam to make a difference. I have "the real shave co" shaving oil and I use it after a shave to "line up" my beard or thick "chin strap" if you will. Basically I shave somewhat close to it. Then after a warm rinse I use shave oil on and close to the "chin strap". With the shave oil I get a real nice straight cut line in which the blade just glides effortlessly over. I don't think I would like it for the whole face. Then again I use a shavette to "line up". Also for myself, directly under my chin I like to use the oil to touch up rough and sensitive spots with my DE.

Hope that helps.
