All of the advice, video's and information you can obtain from the professor's of DE shaving is worth it's weight in gold, no doubt. The techniques and methods are all great pointers and have all enabled me to stumble on what might be the acme shaving prep for myself.
For the last 3 shaves, I've been using Proraso or Cremo Cream, building it up and wetting it a little in my hand, and then spreading it over my face and then using a slightly dampened brush, (using that Vulfix 68 is a gas for this), and beginning to build up the lather on my face.
Then I load the brush with Tabac soap and spread that around, using enough water to get it all going nicely. I've been ending up with a lather that could cushion a machete.
Using a Vision and Progress with Derby's I honestly don't feel much of anything on the first pass, but the sound tells me I'm doing it right.
For the second pass, I've been doing the exact same as the first one, building a beautiful thick, rich lather right there on the skin, and today using a Progress, I was going either XTG or ATG with no effort whatsoever. A little touch up and it wasn't BBS all the way, but it was extremely close with no nicks, no errors.
The reason I'm posting this is having read some of the other newcomers problems, (my face use to come out medium - rare) all I can say is don't quit!! GET MAD! Realize that your attempting to shave your skin off and work at finding that angle of attack so the blade is only hitting the beard and leave your skin on your face!!
Using a lather that coats your face like cake frosting provides such a cushion without any friction at all, that blade slides across the skin like a downhill luge.
Keeping digging and sooner or later your going to find the right combo of everything that works for you, your beard and skin type. Don't quit!! You're going to find the mother lode! Good shaving and best wishes,,Patrick
