Hi everyone. I've got a question. I recently saw a rare naturally occurring combination Belgian coticule/BBW for sale. It is offered for sale at about $120 USD. Would you guys consider this a good deal? The darker side had a grit equivalency of about 5k and the lighter side was 8k-10k. The measurements are 2"x3" and is about 1 1/8" thick. I know it's rare to find these stones and I would really like to use it to hone my own razor. My gut feeling is to jump on this purchase but I'm a newbie and wanted to make sure I am buying a good quality hone. It was used by a barber for many years and is in excellent condition. Please see attached. Thanks for your input.

the yellow coticule is worn off.
If you want to buy a quality coticule, contact Bart, he might be able to help you.

Combination coticule/bbw hones are not that rare. Ardennes doesn't even sell them at a premium price (yet). You money would be much better spent on another stone

I would call that a Belgian Blue stone with traces of coticule. This stone is grossly overpriced for what it is. Bart has a good reputation here, I would talk to him about getting a quality stone.

I've seen that hone show up on ebay for awhile now. It started at like $350 and I guess he's been going down.

As others said, it will be functionally useful as a BBW, the coti is mostly worn off. It's thick, but dimensionally small. I wouldn't pay more than $35 for it even if I wanted a BBW.

As been said, the actual Coticule part is pretty much worn out.

Furthermore 3" is on the short side to sharpen razors. I would recommend 5" at the very minimum, certainly if you don't have a lot of experience with razor sharpening. 6" would be ideal. 7" or 8" a nice luxury.
A width of 1.5" is sufficient. 2" is great. Everything wider is unneeded.

$120 for that hone is outrageous.

Best regards,
Bart.

Just remember that the fact the seller calls something rare doesn't make it so.

In fact, 99 times out of 100, its the exact opposite. For example, I saw a Durham Duplex on the 'bay a few days ago marked as rare, with a starting price of $600 and a BIN of $850, if memory serves.....almost fell off my couch laughing.

Hi Bart,

Thanks for your input. I've signed up as a member on your website. I've also sent an email to ardennes regarding vault no. 50 to see if I can get a hold of one of those combinations stones you spoke of.

Yes! It was off Ebay. I bid on it and lost. Another guy that won wanted to pay by cheque which the seller did not want to accept so he offered to me as a second chance. I guess I'll pass on this. Thanks.

Yeah, not a good deal, almost no Coticule left.
