View Full Version : I'm going bald and I'm only 24...

But I don't care! :w00t:
I usually keep my hair short anyways.
What I want to know is if there are any other guys on here who are going bald and what they decided to do about it.
I'd say the only thing I'm worried about is that I'm single and I'm concerned how I will be treated by women if I go cue ball.
Mods: Sorry if I posted this in the wrong sub-forum. I don't think this fits in the skin/hair care page as I am losing hair to care for :001_smile

I hear some women find bald men sexy and attractive.
I haven't met them yet.

I've tried that and Rogaine. They helped for a while, but my hair is continuing to fall out. I think I'm just going to embrace it and let things go naturally.

A very close friend started loosing his hair in high school.
He never had any trouble with women - in fact he has married four of them.
Head shaving is one proactive approach. Since it's stylish these days and you and your lady friends will see it as a virile rather than a limiting factor in your virility. And then you can report here on what blades & systems you use to keep your head shaved.
Embrace it, there's really no easy way to go back!

I thought I was going to take after my maternal grandfather, as he is in his 70s and still has a full head of hair. Apparently, my genetic make up decided to dictate I take after my Mom's uncles and start balding before I was 30!
How much do Bic razors cost these days?

Started losing my hair at about 21....this was in the late 80's. I went to several dermatologists and tried Rogaine. The last dermatologist I went to had a great prescription for me....go home and get over it...you can not fight genetics. The only "solutions" out there for male pattern baldness are a rug/weave or plugs. I was not interested in having a mop on my head and was not willing to go thru the expense and pain of micro-transplants. I went with crew cuts until it got too thin to matter. At that point I went out and bought a HeadBlade and started going cue ball. Women love it (get the rubbins all the time) and I truly do not miss the care and maintenance.
I can understand where you are with things, because at your age I was totally obsessed with going bald. I can only say that if you want to try the plugs or a mop...go for it! However, if that is too much effort or expense...get yourself a $10 HeadBlade at RiteAid and go all the way. You will be surprised how liberating it actually is.

hahahhahahaha!!!!!
I started losing my hair in college - have never had problems with women (I'm two behind that guy) - here's the truth: if your hairline matters to a particular girl, there is a better one (girl) for you elsewhere.
What I did about losing my hair? I let it go.
Remember: Jessica Rabbit went for Roger because he made her laugh. The hare didn't matter.
Statin drugs can cause baldness.

Learn a couple of witty retorts:
"God made just a very few beautiful scalps. The rest He covered with hair."
and my personal favorite:
"I'm not bald. I'm simply taller than my hair."
(I'm in the same balding boat, and am entirely content to let life take its course.)

I'm 29 and noticably thinning (have been for several years), and I just buzzed it and went on. I love not having to fool with my hair in the mornings. I would shave it with a razor, but that would take too much time to suit me. A once every 2 weeks' clipper session fixes me right up.

Once a week w/ a DE fixes my thinning hair.
My friend who was losing his hair and shaving it begged me to give it a try and I'm sorry I didn't try it earlier.
Going from constant worry over my hair to "Damn I look good bald!"; it was a big load off my shoulders.
And warm lather on the noggin feels good too.

All of my cousins on my mom's side of the family lost their hair very early...a couple of them were using rogaine in high school.
Eventually they all embraced it and started rocking the cue ball...it works for them. Don't think any of them ever had trouble with women as a result...its all about confidence.
I envy them a little...I have very thick hair that can be annoying, especially in the summer. Unfortunately I've got a lumpy head...if I didn't I think I'd shave it.

I've had a number of friends who started losing hair early. Some were upset, but none of them had any trouble with women. Keep it short or shaved and don't worry about it.
Don't forget to put sunscreen up top, either.
Me? I started graying at 22. It was worrisome at the time, but I got over it. No Grecian formula here. I let it go natural and keep it fairly short.

Same here. I started losing my hair when I was about 18. Thinning ever since. I just shave it down every week with some electric clippers. Quick, easy, and a lot cheaper than going to the barber.
If you have a lumpy or scarred head, shaving can be an issue. If you do, I'd just buzz it. If you don't, I'd shave it. Trying to cover it, or compensate for it, never ends well.
Yeah, it would be nice to have a full head of hair. Then again, it would be nice to be married to Jennifer Connelly.

When I started losing mine I shaved my head to see if I could pull it off. The world didn't end, in fact it worked alright.
I grew it back (what parts would grow back) for a couple years, lost more hair, and have been shaving it ever since. It's actually a relief, + my wife likes it.
FYI, if you ever decide to take it all off: shaving one's dome is a little different from shaving the face, there's no shame in sticking to cartridges and progressing slowly. I use a DE for both, but in hindsight I would have taken more time with the noggin.
The cartridge razors might suck in a lot of ways, but the better ones are made so it's hard to nick yourself.

I had an afro in HS and up until like age 22ish. I started getting the "monkey butt" but tried covering it up w/ my fro. Eventually I said F it and shaved my head bald. Never looked back.
I use a DE razor for my head and a straight for my face. Every once in a while I will shave my head w/ the straight.
Also when I had my fro I never wore hats. Now that I'm bald my collection of different style hats is slowly growing. Granted it is only at like 6 but hopefully it will get larger. ( no baseball caps though )

Try the generic Rogaine (generic name: minoxidil) again. You can get it at Wal-mart, Target etc.
It probably will not regrow your hair, but it will slow down the hair loss. It will also make the hair you have thicker.
If money is a concern, you don't have to use the Rogaine every day. Try using it 4x week.
I basically shave my head, but not with a razor. I use barber clippers with a No. 1 guide.

I've read that certain prostate medications can slow hair loss, or even regrow hair, in the case of male pattern baldness. Saw palmetto is an herb that has similar properties.

My hair started to turn white in college, It is getting harder and harder to hide it in my naturally blond hair so I have to keep it cropped pretty close. I got lucky Dad is bald mom had early white hair, hers came about the time as me. I decided long ago if/when I go bald, I am just going to shave it off and be done with it.

I just use my electric clippers without a guard to keep my head shaved. I like the somewhat bristly look and feel of a freshly shaved head, and the best part is feeling the wind on my scalp while driving :w00t:
I often get complements on what a nice-shaped skull I have :001_smile
Actually, I think the best part is not having to screw around with gel, combs, hairstyles... just get out of bed and the 'do is ready to rock.

My hair started thinning out when I was 22 or 23 and it's not getting any better. I have tried many products with no success. I can pulled off a buzzed head so it's what I do and not only that it's cooler in the warme months. If all else fails wear a hat.
Shaved/buzzed head= less money on shampoo and less money trying to bring my hair loss back.

When my hair started going in my mid-20's, I bought a set of clippers. I worked through the various guard sizes as my hair continued to fall out. Eventually, cut it without a guard. Finally about 5 years ago, I went to the razor. My wife prefers my head shaved. I tell her that I could grow a reverse mohawk at any time for her, but she is content with my shaving it all off. :w00t:
My son shaved his head to in support of me and is keeping it shaved. He's received a lot of compliments.
If I can make one complaint, it is that it is 'cold'.

Propecia (finasteride) and Rogaine 5% foam combo is the best medical treatment, if you are so inclined. It does get expensive and needs to be continued indefinitely. If stopped, all gains are lost in a couple months. I've not been impressed with Nioxin.
Sounds like you are embracing the new you, however :001_smile.

rogaine works for some people, but its not overwhelming and often it just slows down hair loss rather than reversing it. Actually this is something I am working on in my lab. Its possible that for some hair loss conditions, a protein that I discovered works to trigger hair may be of benefit. I am very optimistic about it, however, its still going to take a couple years more development to get it to market.
Cheers

I found that when I was using Rogaine, although it did slow my loss considerably, it really dried my scalp out. Prolly because whatever liquid suspension it was in was alcohol based...I am not a chemist...but it really itched!

I was using Rogaine for a while, but I started getting random bouts of tachycardia and I deduced it was caused by Rogaine. Propecia seems like it comes with too many side effects that I don't want to deal with.

I started losing my hair at 19 (I'm 22 now). I use Rogaine and still have most of my hair, but I know the clock is ticking. I'd shave my head if I honestly thought it would look good, but my head has some weird bumps and a mole. My solution was to start wearing fedoras, though the hair loss was only a small reason for that.

I really notice my hair loss when I was 25. I had told my self growing up that I would not comb over like my Dad. I decided to go Bruce Willis and take the guard off of the clippers. I did that for a couple of years. Now I spend a few hours a day on shave forums. I might as well enjoy it. I like experimenting with new ways to mow it down. I was already married when I started, so I can't speak about the ladies. Although some of the ladies that I know seem to think it's a crystal ball and like to see if it's smooth. Wish I would have tried it when I was single. :001_tongu

Thankfully I just had grey and white hair showing up at 16. It's not noticeable unless I let my beard or hair grow out.
One grandfather had a full head of hair at 60, then lost most of it by 65... the other one was already sporting a comb-over at 50.
Thankfully I'm taking after the Scottish side of my family and look like a yeti :001_tt2:

Grass doesn't grow on a busy street.
When I asked my doctor if there was anyway to save my hair, he said, "Sure...castration."
When I asked my barber the same question, he suggested a paper bag.
The main thing is to keep what remains short. And remember, there's nothing like a cold shower on a bald head.
