Two razors from antique show

First, I really have to recommend the antique show down by the Atlanta airport. I purchased the two razors below for $3 (GEM) and $4(Gillette). I bought the pack of razors for $1, although that was mostly because I liked the person selling them. There were more DE's as well as a decent number of straights and one Rolls without case-thanks to the guys in the other thread that ID'd that one for me. I'm new to this, so I'm not sure what value I left behind, and I only got half way through the show--there was an entire other building! I've included pictures of the two razors I bought. I'd love to hear any info on them that you guys have. I think the code on the Gillette is D3, although I may be reading that wrong. And apologies for the quality of the photos; when I have more time I'll come up with a better photo set-up for future razors.

And now that I think about it, I do have two specific questions.
1) What are good blades for the GEM?
2) I've soaked these in vinegar and baking soda, cleaned them with anti-bacterial soap and warm water, and boiled them. Are they safe to shave with? I am anxious to start! Thanks all.

Yep, they're way good to shave with! go crazy!

The GEM uses Single Edge blades. These are available in many drug stores (I live in New York City and have seen them in Walgreens and CVS).

GEMs are great shavers and you should love them.

As for whether or not your sterilization methods were effective, I'd guess yes, but I always sterilize my razors in Barbicide before shaving with them just to be sure.

Very good deals! The Gillette is known as a flair tip and if the D3 is correct that means it was manufactured in the third quarter of 1958.

The GEM is known a s a push button. Very good razor.

1.Get a 10 pack of GEM made by Personna blades at Walgreens, they're very good.
2. More than safe enough to use. A thorough cleaning with anti bacterial dish soap gets them as clean as the eating utensils and glasses we stick in our mouths every day.

Nice finds! That Gillette Super Speed looks like what is known as the '58 TV Special. It is definitely more collectible than a normal Flare Tip Super Speed of the same era. Nice find!

I would also guess that the boiling would safely sanitize your razors. I've always just used rubbing alcohol and that might be a good way of putting your mind at ease.

Correct what he has is a 1958 Flair Tip Superspeed, but it's actually a TV Special, which were only made during 1958.

Also, that Push Button Gem will be a great razor. You should totally take it for a whirl as soon as possible. :w00t:

I thought so, was actually at mr-razor confirming it. I noticed the knurling was different than a typical flair tip but wanted to be sure before I posted.

Great grabs! I like Ted Pella blades for the Straight Edge razor.

get the PFTE coated blade. Don't be intimidated by the word "dissect" in the link. Ok you can be a bit intimidated but those SE razors give a great shave.
