I drink sparingly, but like good whisk(e)ys. I am quite a fan of Blantons --a good whiskey; very soft, smooth, honey overtones. Just a really nice glass. I enjoy it neat with a side of water.

Is anyone else a fan of this?

About two years ago I was attending a management seminar that was being held in a 19th century mansion of all places. I arrived early and being as it was a Sunday evening, I went to the bar to watch the footbal game and have a drink before dinner. It was a very small bar with about four seats at the bar and a couple of small tables in front of a fireplace. Nice little cozy bar with enough single malts to make a scotch drinker swoon. Anyway, I order my usual Knob Creek on the rocks. I am the only one in the place except the bartender. When I finish my drink and am contemplating ordering another, the bartender asked me if I had ever tried Blanton's Bourbon. I had never even heard of it. I hesitated and he said, how about one on the house and then tell me what you think of it. Well, never to turn down a free bourbon, I accepted his offer. Fast forward two years and Blanton's is my favorite bourbon. I like Gentelmen Jack, still drink Knob Creek occasionally and have been known to sip a Jim Beam Black Label, but if I really want a bourbon, I go for the Blanton's. Very smooth, not as sweet as some and always consistent.

Outstanding stuff, my favorite bourbon. I've had a bottle of it sitting unopened for too long waiting for a special occasion, but have a couple of graduations coming up this spring that will rate it.

Who has collected all the different horses on the stoppers? I always seem to get the same one.

I have four different stoppers styles out of about 7 total, all of which my wife has claimed!

From the Blantons website:

The tiny horse and jockey on the bottle stoppers have become a trademark of Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon. The rich heritage and tradition of horses in Kentucky parallel that of bourbon. We have produced a collectors edition set of eight different stoppers, with horse and jockey in different strides and poses. Each stopper is marked with a single letter that spells Blanton's when the set has been completed.

I didn't know that they had different stoppers...

Blantons is a quality bourbon, but I prefer the Van Winkle line of products greatly over Blantons.

Yes, it is one of my all-time favorites.

Sadly, I live in an ABC state and they stopped carrying Blanton's a few years ago.

Blanton's has several siblings, produced of the same recipe at the same distillery (Buffalo Trace Distillery). They differ only in barrel aging and selection by the master distiller. These include Rock Hill Farms, Elmer T. Lee, and Ancient Age. I highly recommend the first two. Ancient Ancient Age 10-year old is a very tasty bargain, if you can find it.

As an English-(well, slightly Welsh-)man, I enjoy Scotch, and Irish Whiskey a lot. Being interested in whisk(e)y (amongst other drinks) generally, I profess a taste for Blantons, where bourbon is concerned.

Ditto. More generally, I'd say that Buffalo Trace's offerings beyond the Van Winkle line are excellent.

Incidentally, I picked up a special cask-strength bottling commissioned by Maison du Whisky last summer in Paris. I have a soft spot for cask-strength whiskey so I had high hopes for it. It's very good, but it's a little hot and generally not as good as any of the various cask-strength members of Buffalo Trace's Antique Collection Whiskies (George T Stagg, William LaRue Weller, and Thomas H Handy).

I wish I had some to review. Can I do it from memory (from about four years ago)?

Tim, That's no problem. That's why I'm not reviewingit myself. I don't want to do it from memory either. I know you've got others you can review though, buddy.

I tend to rotate through different spirits. I really like Burbon in the fall. Blantons is also one of my favorites but I must tell you my go to burbon, and I have had most of them is Makers Mark. For the money (here it is 60% of Blantons, Bookers, or Van Winkle), it is tough to beat.

Not a fan of Blanton's. IMHO, its rather harsh and one-demensional, and its price doesn't help those qualities. I'm more of a smooth bourbon fan. My favs are Woodford Reserve and Eagle Rare. Just my $0.02.

!!!

To me, Blanton's is as smooth as it gets. In fact, the one thing about it that is not perfect is that I wish it had a bit more of a bite to it.

The only thing smoother I have found than Blanton's is Elmer T. Lee. To my palate ETL tastes better and is much cheaper. You all might want to also try WT Kentucky Spirit if you need a bit more bite.

In fact, Blanton's and Elmer T. Lee are the same whiskey except for aging and barrel selection by the master distiller. Blanton's is older, has a more refined taste profile, and is a single barrel bottling. But, both were made the same.

And, yes, I have a bottle of Kentucky Spirit and I always try to have one on hand.
