So just for fun, i'm watching 2 Ebay auctions in the last 2 minutes go whizzing by.
They were both for Fat Boy's.
The first one went for $79 (I think) and the second went for over $80.
Is it just me, or is this a crazy amount to pay for one of these?
(on the plus side, If I sold mine, I know it will sell for good money!)

Whatever the market will bear. These Fat Boys and Adjustable Gillette's are quality razors. They're made of solid brass with nickle plating that will last for years. If these same razors had to be manufactured today what do you think it would cost? IMO...Well over $100 easy. We are not talking about some flimsy razor here by real quality.
In due time I bet other Gillette razors will also get way up there is price. Supply and demand will be the determining factor in the prices as they become harder to find in good shape.
Even though I sold off my Gillette adjustable razors, I still feel they are worth every penny that people pay for them. The price will only get higher as more people discover the quality shaves that they deliver.
Cheers.

Were they cased? Mint? If so, I can understand. If they were uncased, I don't really get it. I understand they're good razors, but I own two Fat Boys and didn't pay more than $30 for either of them.

Ebay prices aren't really the best guideline as to prices...some people get carried away without proper research (here in the BST), or you can get a couple of people in a bidding war.
I recently listed a Slim (that I had picked up as part of a mixed lot) as a means to fund my newly acquired SRAD. It was in "good" condition without a case and it went for almost $60!! SWMBO keeps asking if I'm planning on selling anymore of my rotation

I have a mint cased one that you could not buy for $79. It will cost considerably more than that to get me to part with it.

And yet mint cased Fatboys are going on the BST for about 60% of those prices.

Not true. According to the BST post by thirdeye we would consider mint cased to technically be a razor never used, with instructions and unopened blade pack. I have yet to see one of those on the BST. However you are correct we do have quite a few near mint cased Fatboys showing up periodically on the BST for anywhere from $50 to $80. I think the lower priced ones being sold at the lower price more from the members generosity than anything else. If that same member took his photos and razor to the bay he would make considerably more.

I understand that condition and collectability (is that even a word?) factor into the price, but I paid $35 for mine with a case in excellent condition 3 years ago.
Everyone wants one, but do they know why?

Ahhhh The highest price I've seen was a mint cased one for $50, I thought that was the high-end. I wonder what the next razor with crazy prices will be.

I paid $20 for mine, not perfect, but good enough to shave with for me. But maxman brings up a good point. Here's my theory about the Fat Boy craze. It seems that people new to DE shaving believe that FBs are the pinnacle of wet shaving, for whatever reason, so they bid like crazy on eBay, mostly, and rush to get them here on the B/S/T - the other day one went in one (1) minute. (I find that incredible, and, as one poster wrote, people actually hit reffresh waiting for FBs to come up for sale.) Thus, subsequent new DE shavers see this and then they think that FBs are the ultimate shaving machine and they *need* one, for whatever reason, so they in turn do the same thing. It really is supply & demand, as Shamus says, and so back to maxman's point: I think the "craze" has perhaps overtaken the actual utility of FBs. In other words, they're desired simply because they're desired, if that makes any sense. I could be way off base, but this it what it seems to me. Fat Boys have been romanticized - and so, like any material commodity, if it seems "worth it," it becomes worth it (anyone remember the Beanie Baby craze?). FBs have a sort of gold market value that seems, at present, a bit inflated to some. Again, could be off the mark, but that's my take on it anyway.

They're not making any more, prices can only go up as fewer and fewer become available in the market and the internet lets people buy from outside their local area.

I'm glad I feel no need to own a "Fatboy" model.

Thanks Pioneer. You said pretty much exactly what I was trying to say.
It made more sense in my head.
I obtained a Tech as part of a package deal. I didn't want it, wasn't even going to use it. But after cleaning it up and looking it over again I decided it was worth a try.
I got one of the best shaves I've ever had. Now it's a part of my regular rotation.

I want one, and I know why... it's because everyone else wants one & I want to see what the fuss is about! But with the other 5 DEs, 1 SE, 3 straights, acquired w/in my first 3 months of wetshaving, I shut myself off before SWMBO did.

Got my Pils for less than that - and none of my DOZEN Fatboys cost more than $45....one of these days, I'm gonna be auctioning all the way to the bank:biggrin1:
p.s. All of the Fatboys were Ebay purchases!

I bought a FB off eBay just this week. Paid $38.50. The photo's look nice, but until it actually arrives I'll withhold judgment. With that said, since i started wet-shaving, I've never actually shaved with a DE, strictly str8s and I don't really have any desire to even try 'em, at least not until the novelty of str8 shaving wears off, or all my blades are dull at the same time, or I'm in a big rush and need to shave fast. I just wanted one to have one. Eventually I'll try it, maybe I'll hate it, maybe it'll be everything I ever wanted in a razor, though I kinda doubt it. Maybe it's an investment, maybe the fad will pass and it'll become worthless. At least I've got it, and the option of using it... or not. I'm just glad I got mine for less than $40.00. There is no way I'd ever pay more than $40.00 though, so I figured the time to get it was now.
Am I contributing to this fad?

The FatBoys are collectible, you can get a good shave with them but most of all they are just fun to use.
Don't know if this is just a short lived spike in prices or a long term trend.
Time will tell.

I've been using straight razors for 8 years or so now. It never gets old and for me it's no slower than a DE shave but it's easier because it is second nature but I have to concentrate more with a DE. I started using DEs because all my razors needed honing. I will still get my straights honed but I'm in much less of a hurry now that I have An excellent alternative in my growing DE collection .

Hopefully it's a spike or I'll never get to try one, last night a uncased clean 1960 went from $34 to $86 in less than 10 sec.
There nice and all to look at but I'll pass for that kind of money

I typed in "Vintage Shaver" on eBay last night and stumbled across this auction.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370360497713&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123
At the time, there was about a week left on it, with a starting price of $1.99. I knew there was a chance not many people would find it (due to the misspelling of "Gillette" and no mention of fat boy or adjustable anywhere), but I didn't really want to wait a week to see. So, I emailed the seller to see if they might consider adding a "Buy it Now" price. They emailed back and said sure, so I checked it and there it is...$4.99 plus $1.90 shipping for a Fat Boy. That's by far the best eBay deal I've gotten so far. I felt a little bit guilty, but all I asked them to do was email me back what they might sell it for if they did add a Buy it Now price.

Type "Fat Boy" in Ebay and you'll get a bunch of Slim's that people think are Fat Boys. Then when you tell them, half of the sellers say "how do you know?" (you have to say that with attitude, like they don't believe you)
I don't believe the demand for Fat Boys is a spike. There are 'spikes' for items like Red Tips, that get hot for a while and then ease back. Fat Boy demand remains pretty consistent.
Don't forget the importance of checking lots when searching for FBs. That's how I got mine - which isn't high in my use rotation, but I guard with my life

Just keep checking your antique stores, and don't give up. Another member here just posted that he found one in a case for only $2.12. It looks NOS. They are out there!

For whatever it may be worth . . .
When I was trying to get a Fatboy on eBay, I set myself a shipped price high limit of $25. My bids failed about 16 times. I took the average shipped price on the winning bids, and it came to somewhere in the low $30 range. I eventually got my Fatboy for $25.02 + $5.00 shipping. It's in nice condition, good mechanical condition, no brassing, scratches not too bad, paint loss on the numbers not bad. There's no case, but I don't care about that.
Of course, now that I've got mine, I've seen some go for less than $20 on eBay, and every now and then someone mentions finding one for $2 at a flea market.
So I could have done much better or much worse. The only point is that what you'll end up paying, if you're determined to get one, is unpredictable.

The Toggle, kind of a cross between a Fatboy and a Tadpole, also has astronomical pricing....Currently on the Bay, A Toggle CASE ONLY is at $122.50 with over 2 hours to go!

I guess I lucked out big time. I recently purchased 3 Fat Boys (2-'59's & a '61) for $1.50 each at a local antique shop. Granted they took some cleaning but all three cleaned up great and work just fine. No, they are not for sale, the two '59's go to my two grandsons when they start shaving and the '61 is mine for when I get older and shaky, too shaky to wield a str8 anymore.
