View Full Version : Sliced off the tip of my finger yesterday.

I was reaching into the travel kit in my suitcase where my DE loaded with a Feather was laying in wait. My fingertip came across it just right and it took off the pad of my left middle finger, about 1cm across and 1.5mm deep.
I didn't even notice until I looked down and saw my hand was gushing blood. I ruined my favorite dress shirt, too.
Here's a pic after I taped it up. The white circle to the right of my finger is the part that got sliced off.
So if you travel, be careful, and take your blade out first.

Da DAMN!
Yup, keep those things in a cage! A solid cage!
I reached into the bathroom drawer the other day...glad I was looking. I had put a used Derby into the used blade slot of the pack and it had crept about half-way out and could have done some damage. I put the used blade in a different pack that holds the used blades in so they don't come out.
Hope you heal up fast.
That sucks about your shirt...especially while traveling. But now you have an excuse to go shopping for a souvenir shirt.

Normally, that would be me as well, but I actually managed to think of that last trip.

When you do this, it's customary to give the victim wine, and then serve bagels.
Pass the cream cheese.
Very unattractive. At least it was a Feather and you managed a clean, sharp cut, huh? Best wishes for a speedy recovery and a nice new shirt!

Suggestion: Save that piece of skin in the freezer so when you eventually try a straight shave you'll have something to graft from!:thumbup1:

Yep, very clean cut. I wonder how long it will take to heal. Thanks for the kind wishes.

 I've been straight shaving for over a year. Only injury from that was actually on the same finger, on the knuckle side. I caught the back of my finger with the blade when I reached around behind my ear to pull my cheek tight. Ended up filleting my finger almost to the bone. That one bled for a good 2 weeks and was sore for a month. Still have a nice scar as proof. :)

Sorry to hear about that one.
For the record. Don't put a folded straight in your pocket thinking it will not open between the bathroom and the kitchen table where you plan to hone it!:001_rolle It will not....stay closed....and you will not notice till....! Well you get the picture!

I am sorry to hear about your misfortune. Like you said, one should always remove the DE blade. It is not only safer, but allows you to take the DE in an airplane.

I did the exact SAME thing 6 years ago, but with a Mach 3. The skin was lodged up in the cartridge and I threw it out.
Sorry, it doesn't grow back, there is still a small "flat spot" on the tip of my finger!!! Hahaha. Goodluck!

That's it. Don't let something like a near amputation stop you from getting the most out of your blade.
Sorry to hear about the injury.

Were you going WTG or XTG?
I've sliced off parts of my finger with a blade in a Futur. I truly feel your pain.

Damn. I sliced my finger once puting on a new blade in my Merkur and it put a deep cut vertically along my finger. I had some put some superglue in it to stop it from bleeding. There is no doubt that those blades are sharp.
Good that you're all right!
Picture is good!

Dude! That is one gnarly pic!
Sorry to hear of your shirt. Those cuts can be a real bugger. The location is most definitely NOT convenient.
Thank goodness it wasn't a Slant. You'd be showing us a pic of your finger from the middle knuckle down!

I did the same thing back when I was a recruit reaching in my bag for my twin blade. I did the same thing to the same finger on 2 different incidents. Still a little scarification never hurt anyone did it? Thanks for being man enough to share and help out others.

(The following is a joke, told to me by a rabbi)
Did you hear that some progressive Jews are having Bris (ritual circumcisions) done on-line these days? Yeah! They use e-mohel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohel)! http://www.smileyhut.com/music/rimshot.gif (http://www.smileyhut.com)
Seriously, though Terribly sorry about the finger (and the shirt), especially while traveling. That's rough. Those Feathers, they'll bite if you're not careful!

Well guys I'm off to a stat care center to get this looked at by a professional. The cotton gauze is stuck to the wound and despite soaking in peroxide it won't budge. I don't have what it takes to just rip it off myself.
That, and on the advice of a nurse I grudgingly need to get a tetanus shot.
But that reminds me: I was feeling sorry for myself Monday night and bought a new shaving brush. It's an Edwin Jagger best badger and should be here in a few days.

Good idea. Go see a doctor. I had a table saw incident last year around this time. Not good. The finger doctor fixed me up. I have an emergency room pic if anyone wonders what a table saw does to fingers?

I had something similar happen to me once. I was fortunate that I took far less off and that it was a partial slice rather than a scalping. What was also similar was the fact that I didn't feel a thing either. The folks at Feather have to know that if DE fails they should be able to corner the market on spiral deli slicers.
