For those of you that were worried about a National ID card (surely there are at least a few of us here), and what that could possibly entail ("Papers, please."), what about a government mandated implanted microchip, suppossedly to keep track of your medical records for ease of access? Yet another piece of frightening legislation hidden within the so-called "Health Care Bill". Check this out: http://goldfuture.wordpress.com/2010/03/19/both-house-and-senate-health-bills-require-the-micro-chipping-of-americans-31810/

Not to get too political but I wonder where all these newborn civil libertarians were when the last admin was wiretapping the phones of US citizens without a warrant and checking up on our reading habits?
On a nonpartisan note it's become pretty clear that it will not be possible to live in a modern society with all its benefits and economic advantages while maintaining the freedoms that belonged to a less developed, less technically advanced, and less controlled time. It's a good thing to keep an eye on each new violation of our liberties and privacy but the causes are intrinsic to our culture and economic system. And as long as partisanship shows like it does when half the country applauds domestic spying while the other half applauds chip implants it's pretty easy to see where we are headed.

I think you are wrong about that. Half the country didn't applaud either one of those things, you just heard the loudest voices on each side of the isle. I believe that most of the people are squarely in the middle of most of these fights, agreeing with parts of each side, but mostly not doing anything. If the apathetic middle would find some energy to do something, politics would be entirely different.
Then again, if I'M wrong about this, we've already screwed the pooch and it's a long trip down the hill.

Typical lies.
Look closely at the actual documents this joker puts on his site and you'll see that none of them have ANYTHING to do with HR 3962, the health care reform bill that just passed. Everything else is unrelated recommendation from old documents or old versions of bills whose provisions were long ago removed. Even those that mention data-trackingdevices only refer to them in the context of life-saving devices. Nowhere is there any mention of implanting RFID devices into every American. In case, it's a dumb idea that never went anywhere.
Don't take my word for it. Do a search of HR 3962 and look for yourself. You won't find any language of this kind in there.

I don't subscribe to the belief that the world, or even America is in a death spiral. Rather, the opposite.
I was raised in a very fundamental Protestant denomination and was taught that "men's hearts will grow increasingly evil, leading to Armageddon and the end of the world."
Imagine my surprise to find that many types of crime are going down, and have gone down for decades. Similarly, when I was growing up in rural Missouri, it was routine for fathers to molest their daughters, and for men to molest small girls with little consequence. Now, there are protections for women that are much better. African-Americans, in the town where I was raised, are no longer living in one little section of town, washing every one else's laundry.
I think my world is getting better. I hope yours is as well...

+1. Slate.com has an interesting article up this week on the 4 biggest whompers being told about the health care bill. It basically comes down to someone purposely misinterpreting or bending the intent of a specific provision in the most partisan way, and then everyone else just hitting <forward> without actually checking the facts.

I am no fan of the health care bill, but this is just the biggest load of steaming guano I have ever seen.
There has indeed been talk recently about the medical device registry and data contained within medically implanted devices - but that discussion revolves around the medical devices that have ALREADY been implanted in people (pacemakers, drug dispensers etc) that may subject the patient to having his personal information obtained by unauthorized parties.
The discussions have been about how to protect those people, and future implant patients so that necessary information can be obtained by medical personnel, but the patients rights to privacy are protected.

I do think the world has moved on beyond the chipping issue. Marketers have been testing facial recognition for many years and in Great Britain with CCTV cameras all over the place they have software that figures out when the actions on camera indicate a crime is likely to take place. At the same time there seems to be a booming trade in IFRD proof carrying cases for Passports and money. Apparently the US govt has speech recognition software looking for certain phrases so I always start a conversation with J Edgar . . . well never mind.

I'm really happy to see this thread. I have been on B&B for only a few weeks now, but I've enjoyed it immensely and learned quite a lot. In the back of my mind, however, lurked the fear that I'd find some thread somewhere involving politics, and it would be an ugly flamewar. I worried I'd see posters that I've come to respect viciously attacking something I agree with and that I'd never think of them the same way again. I'm grown up enough to know that not everyone agrees with me, and there's a way to debate ideas in a friendly, mature way. That of course rarely happens on the Internet. I was so worried I would see that... and now I see this.
Thanks, everyone, for taking a step back and not fighting over anything more significant than Williams Shaving Soap.
And now, to bring it back to the topic at hand...

Don't get too upset about it. There's a provision in the bill where you can opt out of the government mandated installation, although you will be required to implant your own device. Unfortunately, the commercially available models are still based on tube technology, so it will be a bit tricky to get it in there. Experts also think that it will be a problem for aviation security, but you will have the option to bulk mail yourself to your desired destination.

I never thought of bacon as being such a hostile, passive-aggressive rally point. And then cheese? Is the OP's original post so threatening that you feel it necessary to cloud his signal with noise? What's actually threatening about it?
It's more gentlemanly to debate, or ignore, then to shout down.
I don't happen to agree with the OP, but think our congress should be put up on treason charges for the bailouts and "health care reform". Luckily for them, I am a completely unquestionably insignificant nobody - but it would be cool if I was some great charismatic leader :-)

In the almost two years I've been a member here, we've had a number of interesting political debates that have remained gentlemanly for a surprisingly long time. We've also had a number that have crashed and burned in a very ugly way. Usually you can tell which is which early on, and members have increasingly taken it on themselves to deploy the BACON (Bacon and Cheese Online Negation) system to stop the train wrecks before they start. And you'll forgive me for being blunt, but threads that start off with the government-mandated microchip are heading off a cliff at full throttle as soon as they leave the station.

I've been 'in country' since Christmas. I would sell my soul (or Fatboy) for a bacon sandwich :001_tt1:
I had a co-worker who spent to in Saudi Arabia.... He said he would plan vacations to Greece so that he could eat Pork for the whole week (and knowing him, drink). Never thought I would miss pork enough to plan a vacation around it, but then I have plenty of pork :).
