I found this site because I was interested in straights, I bought one, I love it! Seeing all this talk about using DE's I decided to pick one up. I Got a Gillette super speed flair tip on the BST. Now I need blades to go in it. I've looked at the WCS site and have no idea which sampler pack to get (college budget) Ive also seen these on ebay:

I'm also not opposed to just picking out recommended blades and buying them individually (making my own sampler) on WCS or any other recommended site.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

i dont know how thick and stiff your beard is but for a medium normal beard go with say Derby, Red Personna or Crystal. Heavy beard go with Astra, Iridum Super, Yellow or Black pack 7 oclock Gillettes, and possibly Feather if your skin is not sensitive. Hope this helps!

Blades are the suck it and see of this game. Just buy the pack you can afford.

And personally, I'd buy from one of the many reputed vendors mentioned here, like WCS.

i will always vote feather above all else - its the only blade i use anymore unless i run out before my next delivery comes in in which case i end up using a wilkinson sword or personna

I made my own sample pack of 8 brands (9 if you include the 120x 1/2 blades that came with my parker straight). Given 4 brands a workout so far, the 5th I took out of the razor relatively quickly, and the 6th is in the DE to try next (and will try in the straight after the DE).

I keep a text file on my laptop, update with my thoughts 1/2hr post shave (when I know how much irritation or how many missed spots there are). So far Derby are my top pick, though you have to cork the edge (on the vertical pack at least) to avoid that first rough shave on a new blade.

Poke around locally, there's a list of stores that have supplies in the wiki, your best bet is drug stores. Might be able to find some good variety close to home to try. If all eles fails, we've got some great folks here that sell supplies (check out the vendor's corner) and there should be one close to you.

YMMV, but although it is nice and I encourage you to try all the different brands, in the end the best blade is the Feather brand. They are sharper and you get more shaves out of a blade. I have a medium course beard and I get about 12 shaves per blade. So if you get a 'sampler pack' be sure there are some Feather Blades included.

Hokay, yet another opportunity for the following to start paying me to recommend them...

http://westcoastshaving.com/ offer very nice sampler packs, let you try out lots of different blades pre-sorted to your budget.

Some will be great, some will tear you up, sadly, there's only one way to find out :thumbup1:

Let us know what works for ya!

Go with one of the sampler packs. Get the big one if your budget allows. You'llnever find the right bladeby reading recommendations - everyone is different. You have to try them before you'll really know. If you're trying to justify the cost, compare the sampler pack to a four pack of cartridges.

I'd definitely recommend going with a sampler pack from WCS. Just buy the one you can afford and go from there.
