View Full Version : Calling all Boston locals & etc.
We are planning a get together on Saturday April 10 at noon at a to-be-announced antique shop min Waltham. The on to Stoddards in Newton and then the options are open. Bring your stones, razors to be honed or shown off, and appetite for food and grog.
So far Jared (danjared), me, and David in Boston are on. More the merrier but we can always plan another if you can't make this one. Post here if you are interested and can make it.

The antique store in Waltham has been a great razor resource in the past. I'll be more than happy to show it to other B&B members.

A Boston meet? Sounds like fun!
Also, I've been to the flea market in Buzzards Bay a few times, and you can sometimes find some good deals on razors. It's best to get there earlier, since there is a guy who goes to pick up razors to sell on the bay.
Well we're up to 4 now -- anyone else game for a meet?

I'd like to, but its a bit of a haul for me. As you can see I'm from the other Massachusetts. I'm right by the N.Y. border, but we have lots of antique shops out here and the surrounding area. If you're ever looking to see what the other Mass. looks like, drop me a PM and we can put something together. :wink2: :001_tongu :w00t:
Can we move our meeting to Saturday, April 24? Hope that still works.

I can't make April 10, unfortunately -- I'm spending that weekend traveling to Baltimore and Minneapolis for the Twins and Orioles home openers.
April 24, though, I can definitely do. If that works for y'all, I'll be there. If you stick with April 10, well, at least I'm missing it for baseball, and not for something boring.
April 24 it is. David will list the address in Waltham of the antique shop he knows & where we'll meet around noon. Then off to Stoddards in Newton. See you there!

Sounds great. Anyone want to carpool from Cambridge?

Jake, should we advertise this in the main forum? I don't know how many people read The Barber Shop, but I'm guessing it's a small fraction of the general readership.
Good idea -- please post it over there. Maybe we can increase the size of our group. Thanks.

Well I suppose we should settle on a place to meet and address the transportation issue.
If I may suggest, lets meet in Harvard Square at 12 noon at a location everyone knows.
As for transportation, what person or persons are volunteering their cars to transport our motley crew?
OK, I can drive my Passat wagon. It can hold 3 plus me since I have a chidl seat installed & would prefer not taking it out for the day since it is a pain to install correctly.
Noon on Saturday April 24. Colonial Drug?

Certainly works for me. Jake, I'd love a ride if you're willing. I'm a small guy, but probably not small enough for the child seat. So hopefully demand won't be too high.

OK, 12 noon at Colonial Drugs the 24th of April.

<raises hand> That sounds good. I'd been thinking of going to one of the Boston-area shaving spots soon; this will work well for me.
(edit) wait, April 10 is what I was up for. April 24 is okay, but I'm going to head in before then. I'm up for meeting people on the 10th.
Sorry, the 10th ended up not working so well. If you can, come to town on the 24th also.

Alas, my son is having his Bar Mitzvah on April 24th.
Maybe I could ask the synagogue to change the day...

Mazel tov! Maybe some of us can meet on the 10th, and all of us who can can meet on the 24th.
Should we meet at the synagogue? Seriously -- mazel tov! & we'll definitely do this more than once.

That's fine. And he will be totally pleased if, as a gift, you give him a near-mint 1958 Fatboy w/case, a Shavemac silver tip badger brush, 100 Feather blades, and several pucks of Tabac and MWF. Yes, he has specifically asked ME for this. HE will be very appreciative.

Sounds as good as a Waterman pen that I was thinking would be a good gift for a bar mitzvah and his father!
Just a reminder about our Boston meet-up next Saturday, April 24 at Colonial Drug in Harvard Square. Bring any show & tell items or photos & good stories.
How will we recognize each other? Wear your B&B button.

Any idea what time we'll be back in the T-accessible universe? I have Red Sox tickets for Saturday, so I may have to sneak away a tad earlier than would be ideal.

B&B button? What's that?
You can't meet up without the B&B button. You should have already received yours. No?

I guess I'll just have to appear as an underground B&B member.

What we REALLY need to do is commission Badger & Blade ties -- with little badgers on them.
And badger tie pins.
As for the B&B buttons -- I was just kidding but maybe I cam get made before Saturday.

I could see badger B&B buttons. It shouldn't be pricey to make them.

Which shop are you guys going to? I think I know, but am not sure why it's being kept quiet!

My assumption is that I'm being taken to some country back road only to be forced to shave dry, at gun point, with a Fusion and a can of Edge gel. I'll be left alone and bleeding in the field while the other guys go home to post the video on YouTube. Or something like that.

Man, I wish I'd seen this a month ago! Gotta say though I'd feel a little left out being underage and all

That was fun. Four of us showed up. I did find that last store after a while, but y'all had already left.
I've taken pictures of the antiques I bought, and may post a new thread about them later.
We had a great 1st time meet up in Boston/Cambridge Saturday -- Colonial Drug shared a huge bag of samples & some new items as well. The Colonial proprietor not only knew we were going to be meeting at her place, but was ready with these well-stocked sample bags. She claims they are going to be releasing their new website by the summer -- offering ecommerce with online credit card processing, but meanwhile the Colonial shopping experience still includes "buy now -- pay later!".
The antique store in Waltham that David had discovered -- Felton's -- was a particularly bountiful place with a number of classics including a FatBoy, several ball-end Techs, some SEs, and an almost new Rolls. Pretty amazing collection in good shape at decent prices.
Next meetup late summer with a meal at Redbones. Stay tuned...

Maybe Stoddards will have more stuff in stock by then. :-D
Re Redbones, it was 16 years or so from my first time there 'til my time there last month or so. I'm afraid I'm not due until 2026, so I can't go back yet. :-> Dang, now I'm craving cornbread.

I must have missed you guys by a few minutes - I was there by happenstance at Colonial drug. What a selection of brushes and soaps!
Hope, the lady that runs Downstairs at Felton Antiques, is a terrific lady and has been selling me razors and slide rules and other treasures for a few years. My loyalty to that shop is even stronger than keeping the good deals to myself. :)
