This is a scotch you really have to be in the mood for. Excellent, I agree. However, the peaty-ness of it can be so strong that you can taste it on your pallate the next day. This is not always a good thing IMO.

Love it, it is one of my favorite Scotches...you can almost see the smoke curl up out of the bottle when ou open it. It has been a awhile since I have had a bottle, may have to get one soon.

IMO the cask strength version is somewhat smoother and mellower, which doesn't seem to make sense. My suspicion is that most of the peatiness in this whiskey comes from the water they use to cut it.

That is my single favorite thing about this Scotch.

I completely agree with Tim's review and think that this is a great scotch. I also like the original cask strength version as well.

One of the other reviewers said he doesn't know any scotch lover who dislikes Laphroaig (or words to that effect). Well, my dad is exactly that ... loves scotch, would buy JW Black all the time if he could, loves my Macallan, but can't take those western island scotches: no Talisker, nor Lagavulin, and certainly no Laphroaig!! Oh well, to each his own.

We came across a bottle of scotch in the original box Thorne's 10 years old scotch. We are not sure if we should drink it or save it.... Thoughts:001_unsur?

I'm a scotch lover and have been for years. Pretty much since I was old enough to drink (I'm 41 now). I can't stand Laphroaig. It's not the peat. It's the phenol smell. It smells like a room full of cadavers...blah.

I usually drink Irish whiskey but I do enjoy Macallan Scotch. I've always wondered how you say Laphroaig?? La-fro-IG?

You're riht. I was pronouncing it as though it were Irish gaelic, not Scottish gaelic. My bad.

Great stuff. The cask strength is 55 dollars up here in Maine and is the most powerfully delightful scotch around. Well, maybe just under Ardbeg. Either way, Islay warms my heart all winter long!

For me, I like it after dinner instead of cognac.

What is there to "discuss" about Laphroaig? I wasn't aware that its status as one of the greatest spirits in human history was open for debate. :biggrin1:

I don't know the brand but I can say that it won't age in the bottle. In 100 years time it will still be a 10 year old scotch in a dusty bottle

If it's a rarity keeping it in the original box should add to the value I guess.

None of my whiskies last long enough to acquire value!

I really like Islay single malts and I think Laphroaig is one of the greats. For those who have their reservations can I recommend Islay Mist.

The history is that a dignitary on Islay had a large party (perhaps his son's 21st?) and he had a lot of guests coming from the mainland for whom he felt that Laphroaig would be too strong. He therefore arranged a blending using Laphroaig as the base and other malts from the mainland to soften the dram. I believe that The Glenlivet was used amongst others.

This is a lovely drink. Laphroaig is definitely in the DNA (in fact at a blind tasting my first instinct was that I should be calling it Laphroaig but it wasn't quite right) but it's not as extreme as it's parent.

I would call it Laphroaig for girls, except I know quite a few Laphroaig drinkers amongst the fairer sex!

My brother in law let me know of a local off licence selling Laphroaig nearly half price.

Checked it out and learnt the offer closes tonight.

So I am now in possession of two bottles of Laphroaig 10 year old and my wallet isn't suffering.

Oh happy day!

Edit: and on her her return home SWMBO accused me of corrupting my brother in law - "He wasn't like this before he met you". Guess he'll be thanking me then!
