I keep one each on hand of:
Vegemite (Aussie)
Marmite (English)
Bovril (Irish)
Bovril is the only one that oozes. I prefer Vegemite of the group.
I wonder if any other former colonies of Britannia have a version of this great brewery-waste product.

If anything, Bovril is Scottish. Invented by the Scot John Lawson Johnston and called Johnston's Fluid Beef in 1871, renamed as Bovril in 1886. It is a beef extract, though does contain yeast extract. No Irish in its history.
Also I love Marmite but also prefer the Australian Vegemite.

I love marmite, once I start eating it on toast with butter I can't stop
I grew up eating Vegemite and still love it. It is one of the first things on my shopping list when I head back to Australia.

Well, I don't want to step on your national pride.
The jar I have lists Dublin, Ireland and Crawley UK. You came on so strong I looked it up in wikipedia and read that it was a vegan product between 2004 and 2006. Maybe my jar was from that era.
Roger
Here in South Africa, we have Marmite (great stuff, I have to admit) and Bovril (Eeeeeh… not so much). We also used to have another similar black sticky stuff called Fray-Bentos, which I used to have a serious love-hate relationship with (haven't seen it for years though).

After living in Australia for a year and a half, I determined that Vegemite was merely an excuse for Aussies to eat more butter

I was checking this out at the grocery store just a little while ago, mostly to show my wife that it was yeast extract, which she seemed not to believe. I wasn't sure what to do with it, so I put it back on the shelf.
They only had Marmite, no Vegemite.

Sorry if it sounded coming on strong. Wasn't meant to. (I'm not much of a smiley user!:001_smile)
It went to totally yeast extract when the BSE scare was at it's height. I think it has a bit of beef extract in it again these days.
The marmite with Guinness was quite tasty, as was the one with champagne, though my jury is still out on the champers one!

Didn't the Canadian ski jumpers loose a bet and have to each drink a bottle of maple syrup? I could think of worst things to have to do.

Maybe, I don't know... It's not so bad but the first time you drink one... You run down the street and it's nothing! :tongue_sm

To my un-refined palate, it's like very salty and thick molasse... It's not that exactly but it should give you an idea... I can send you a jar if you want to but I'm not responsible is you puke!:001_rolle

Have you ever tasted the sediment that sometimes is at the bottom of a beer bottle - notably a hefeweizen, a bottle-conditioned Belgian or a homebrew? That powerful but delicious sludge is the essence of what Marmite/Vegemite/Bovril are. I've been told that in Germany pregnant women traditionally drank the beer sediment for its nutrients, but can't comment further on that.
Perhaps its most common usage really is as a vehicle for increased butter usage on toast. It's certainly delicious that way.

I'd have to go with "nasty and non-food" if it's anything like Vegemite. I ate it once and will never do it again.

Interesting! Hefeweizen happens to be my favorite style of beer, so I'm familiar with the yeast sediment. Something tells me that Marmite/Vegamite may be a bit more...in your face?
I may just have to drop the $4 and pick up a jar. Who knows, I may love the stuff.

If you try Marmite or one of the others on buttered toast, spread it as thinly as you possibly can. Think of it as a salt spread, not a jam, to get the right proportion.
My mom, who had a bit of mischievous little girl in her throughout her life, had an eye opening introduction to Vegemite. I had come back from living in Italy with a stash of the hazelnut spread/dessert Nutella. She found she loved, loved, loved the Nutella on toast, in a pbj, and even on its own. One day she spied what to her looked like another brand of Nutella in my kitchen and gleefully grabbed it with an expectation of sweet, nutty goodness. I cried out "Mom, Noooooooo" but with a schoolgirl's giggle popped a heaping fingerful into her mouth. Her sense of conquest quickly turned with her smirk into a pucker of disgust and her eyes slitted into an accusation of utter betrayal of what I had done to her. She lost a little trust in my kitchen that day...

My youngest one's latest response to this question is"A$$". She even said something my wife put in the refrigerator made the whole thing smell like A$$. I quickly said to my wife, "Why'd you put Alex in there?". Alex is daughters boyfriend and if looks could kill...
