View Full Version : Almost vomited while shaving!

And the culprit: The Proraso Pre-Shaving cream, the green tub! man that smell is nasty!
I kid you not, I applied the cream on my face, and the smell just overcome me like when you take a whiff of something rotten and you have a sharp gag reflex. It smelled like a cough syrup called Buckley's we have up here in Canada :crying:
I usually really hate strong smells on my face, but never a product made me actually on the verge of vomiting. And the worst part is that it didn't help me get a closer shave or whatever. I used it with the proraso cream.
So far not so good...I will give the white jar version a try and report later.

Wow. Maybe you got a bad jar. Or maybe that just doesn't agree with you...trade it off!

I think this is how it is supposed to smell? :001_unsur
Not sure how to lookup the expiration date.

Is it spoiled? It doesn't smell terrific but it certainly can't be that bad..

I find the white to have a pleasant...pretty neutral smell.

Have you tried using your hair's conditioner as a pre-shave? They usually don't smell at all (unless it's attached with a specific scent)

Though the green Proraso did work good as a pre I couldn't stand it either; it made my eyes water, my nose running and worst of all it felt like it burned holes in my skin.
The white 'sensitive' version however works equally well as a softener and still has a little menthol bite but is far nicer for me. It has earned a steady place in my routine!

Using mine every morning this week as after only and it's smelling and feeling great. :001_smile

I had some of the Proraso Pre/Post as well, and I too didn't find the scent that pleasant. It also didn't perform any better than the hair conditioner I had been using, but it is vastly more expensive.

Everything involving scent is so YMMV. One man's nostril delight is another's bane

You got that right. I think C&E Nomad smells like death warmed over but many love it. Scent is a huge (possibly the biggest) YMMV we have in this little adventure of ours.

I used it this morning, smelled fine. Not on the level of T&H or TOBS, but fine in its own way. If you felt like vomiting just from the scent, you might be pregnant.:w00t:

I assume that this is a bit of an exaggeration...
After years of cleaning kennels and stalls for Tennessee Walkers, and not finding the smells at all offensive (actually, cleaning stalls is very relaxing alone), I can't imagine finding any shave product so offensive to provoke a gag reflex...
But hey, that's just me....

Perhaps an exception to prove the rule? (no I'm not gonna claim to be tough)
Personally I love the stuff but I have seen a couple of posts where some people have to rinse the menthol from their faces because it hurts.

At least you know Proraso Pre-shave cream is not for you. :001_smile If you have a problem with it you can always sell it.

looool...we're tough in public only :P
But honestly, if I could have seen some benefits, I would have convinced myself that it is worth it. But my shave was no different that usual, it seems like the Pre-Shave did nothing for me at all.
Are you supposed to leave it on your face for a long time?
This is interesting because I was wondering how the Poraso pre post compared to the SMN pre post...since they are "supposed" to be similar.
The SMN prepost works amazingly well. It made an amazing difference in the quality of the shave. They smell is great also in a perfumey cloying kind of way.

The green tub proraso preshave is the BEST :001_tt2:
I use it every morning and wouldn´t have a shave with out it, the white one is actually allmost better :blushing:
What can I say, I LOVE PRORASO PRESHAVE :001_wub:

Are you supposed to leave it on your face for a long time?
I think that the Proraso pre is supposed to be applied and let sit for a little bit, then lathered over. I used mine for the first time the other day and I understand where you are coming from. The scent of menthol is STRONG. Almost made my eyes water.:crying: I didn't object to the aroma, nor the menthol kick, but then I'm a little bit of a masochist... After all, I work for the phone company!
If you objected so strongly to the Proraso pre, I would suggest staying away from the green-tube cream, too. It's not as overpowering as the pre, but is very similar in scent and sensation.
As a possible alternative, maybe let it air out for a day or two? See if that mellows it down enough to be acceptable? Or, just PIF/BST it off.
Good luck, sorry it didn't treat you well.

In my indiscriminate youth, I heartily recommended Buckley's to my friend when his wife was ill, knowing full well she wouldn't like the taste in the least. :001_smile

I wish they made a fragrance free version of the shaving cream

Funny how everyone is different. Although I have sensitive skin, I find the Proraso pre-post refreshing and envigorating. Lovely blast of menthol!

Hmm I really like the smell of the pre shave cream. Also Buckley's tastes good now the old stuff was a little repulsive
If Proraso pre/post almost made you vomit, you should try lathering with a funky-smelling brand new boar brush afterward. The combo WILL make you vomit.
While I don't think Proraso pre/post would make me feel the same, I can understand how a strong scent can do that, especially if you're already queasy from a migraine or a weak stomach to begin with.
Sorry to hear about the nasty morning surprise.

I am sorry that it did not work for you. The good news is that it is sufficiently popular that you should be able to sell it on the BST and get most of your money out of it.

The scent of the white jar version is significantly milder--it is the same green tea scent as the Proraso white tub shaving soap.

Were I you, I would have myself tested for allergies. This sounds like far too violent a reaction to simply not liking a smell.
Allergic reactions can be dangerous, some are life-threatening, and people who have an allergy to one thing are often allergic to other things as well.

I find it to smell strongly of eucalyptus and menthol....as it should. It is one of the most-loved products in shaving and quite a bargain. The fact that you don't like it should be valuable, though, as you can simply avoid those ingredients.
Still, I think your reaction sounds overblown, I've never heard anyone reacting to the scent by feeling ill!

When I open up the jar, I get an almost ammonia-like smell mixed in with the Proraso-ness, but I've never found that to be much of a problem. How much are you using? A tiny, tiny bit on a moistened face is all I use, and I can barely smell anything at all. Maybe if you dial back the amount you're using, you'll get more pleasant results?

Good point....this stuff is VERY concentrated. I don't use pre-shave stuff and use this product in the evening, mainly as a moisturizer.

I'm so disappointed.

moisturizer???
I barely can keep it on my face for 5 minutes before I suffocate. And it dries my skin like crazy.
I double checked to make sure I wasn't using the soap instead but alas, no it is the Pre-Shave version.
I will try the white tub tonight and keep you all posted.

OK, I tried the white version and I got no aversion at all to it, but at the same token it does absolutely nothing for me.
So far, both the white and the green version gave me no difference in shave whatsoever, and with the white version I did not feel any warming or heat sensation at all.
I will still use them until I finish them because I don't want to just throw them away but I will not be repurchasing neither.

The truth of the matter is, for me, at least, when my prep is very good, preshaves of any sort do not make any real difference in the quality of my shaves. That said, the use of these preshave products helps force lazy ol' me to do more prep than I would otherwise on some occasions. I still have a jar of each, and I will use and enjoy both until they are gone--and when that happens, I'll likely spring for the giant tub of the green.
