I've tried to look up a little about razor restoration but kept getting straights so I'll just throw this out there.

I rescued a couple of Gillette Techs today and wanted to clean them up and give them away with some soaps/creams as PIFS. OK, might keep one as I've never used a Tech.

What do you guys use to REALLY clean an old razor? Lye, Borax? Gasoline:001_rolle

These are in pretty good shape but just need a real good cleaning. One has a very small amount of black gunk on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have boiled a few gunky razors (never gold plated) with success. Usually, I just use scrubbing bubbles and a soft tooth brush, followed by a bath in alcohol. For butterfly turn to open models I also soak in mineral oil to lubricate the gears. Finally I use Maas or a like polish. Good Luck

Go to the safety razor forum, at the top of the page is a sticky that explains cleaning. Keep one of the techs, they are very good shavers with a sharp blade.
