Hi all,

I have been shaving for about three weeks now and of course it is very hard to stick to rule #1, which says stick to a setup for about a month to get used to the whole process, with all that information around and great tips from all of you...:thumbup1:

I'm getting quite good shaves now, have been going atg with varying success, and one thing I would like some explanation on: when I use my G adjustable (the one I've been using for two weeks straight) atg, wouldn't it be better to set it to a higher level (say 5 and up), because in a lower setting the blade would be pulling more as it would only cut at the top of the stubble?

It would seem that way, I'm still struggling with finding the right blade for me also, still going through my sampler...

A confused but converted newbie

Hello and welcome! When I use my Gilette Slim I often drop it down a notch or two when I come to the ATG passes. I figure that I've already done most of the cutting with the WTG and XTG passes, and thus can narrow the blade gap for the final pass. Remember: it's beard reduction, not beard removal.

Keep working your way through the blade sample pack. Part of the fun is finding a blade that works well for you.

I hope this is helpful.

When I used my slim I started WTG at #5-6, then ATG at #2-3, ATG at #3-4 and touch ups at #4.

These settings gave me nice comfortable shaves but my face isn't your face. :001_smile

Rule #2. (Ok more of a recommendation I received more than once when I started with a DE) Don't start with an adjustable razor.

It was generally recommended to me not to start with an adjustable razor. Reasoning being a newbie will be tempted to keep adjusting the razor to get a better shave rather than concentrate on improving his technique to get a better shave.

My advice, set the razor at a mild setting, doesn't have to be the mildest, and leave it their until you feel confident in you technique and have found a blade you like. Then start messing with adjusting for different passes.

Rule #3. Don't listen to everything people tell you.

I hope this does help. Best of luck!

I started with a Tech (a mild razor), then moved onto a Super Speed (again mild). It's only now, when I'm more confident that my technique is consistent, that I've started using my Slim.
I tend not to do ATG passes...might be that I don't actually need them...however, I would suggest using a "milder" setting for your ATG's. Howwever, it's your face/hair so 5 could well be your "sweet spot".

If you stay with a milder setting you run less risk of irritation.

for the valuable advice and the slap on the wrist  that's what you get when you break the rules!
I'm going to set it at 2 or 3 for a while, I could go back to my (aluminium) Ball End Tech that I used in the first week (rule #2), but I've kind of grown fond of the weight and grip...
Just a silly theory really, my skin was getting rather sensitive whilst trying it out so I should have realised.
Beard reduction it is!

Thanks again, will report back in later!

My first Tech was an aluminium handled one...the lightness does make you concentrate on your technique so you avoid applying too much pressure.

If you feel ANY discomfort whilst shaving, don't worry about stopping or reverting back to a set-up or technique that was less problematic...pain is not your friend here!
