I just got my grandfather's fountain pen back from restoration. However, since it's more of an heirloom, I decided to pick up a NOS Parker Super 21 for everyday use. This is my first foray into fountain pen use and I was wondering, what do you guys do for ink storage, filling. Do you just fill from the ink bottle, or do you use a well of some sort? I'm sure it varies by pen type, just wondering what I should look at.

I think the general practice is to simply fill from the bottle that the ink is packaged in. The old style ink wells, IIRC are intended for use by old fashioned dip pens, not exactly the thing for fountain pens. The idea is that the water in the ink will evaporate, leaving a more concentrated ink which in turn can increase the possibility of clogging.
This said, I've seen some cool looking ink wells, perhaps if you found an airtight one?
Oh, and lets see some pics of the pens :001_smile

As I buy ink by the liter/1000 cc, I fill the well and fill the pens from there.

Yep, I just fill from the bottle. But I must admit, I've been thinking of decanting some of my go to ink into something that would look nicer on my desk. Ideally I'd like to get something like this. Maybe a nice perfume bottle?

What inks can you buy by the liter?

+1 I usually use 100ml bottles but I would be interested in decanting as well.

I buy from a whole sale company for schools aso. They carry fp ink in blue, red and black, but only per liter. As a liter only costs about 10 usd, I do not mind :wink2:

Is it good ink, though? Do you know the brand?

I would think 1 liter would dry up. Since a liter would last me at least 50 years, I can see it drying up going into the second decade.

Thanks for the info. Looks like one less thing I need to get (for now). Here's a pic.

I just fill from the bottle.
I have a couple of black inks for signing certificates and documents, but otherwise I've been using Noodler's Blue Eel lately for my personal stuff. I'd like to try their Bay State Blue sometime, too. I don't want to have to store the extra bottles. :wink2:

I usually fill from the bottle at home and I use a 1oz nalgene bottle for travel.

I fill straight from the bottle and also carry other pens that use cartridges. As for big bottles of ink, I recently saw a few 20-30 year old Parker Quink Solv-x bottles. Big fellas (i'm guessing around the 300-500ml range). They were 3/4 full and the washable Royal Blue was still its original color. (Unlike small bottles of the same ink and of the same age which turn greenish inside their boxes)

I fill from the bottle and find that displaying the different sized and shaped bottles looks really cool in front of my pen stand on my desk.

It is excellent. Do not want or need anything else. Have used Pelikan, Parker and Waterman ink. But to me this is just as good. It is called "Collall" and made by that company in the Netherlands.
