Awesome and horrifying in the same moment. No doubt about it...the power of the atom is an amazing thing.
Awesome in the amazing potential of its power...and awesome in the level of destructiveness it can cause
NOTE: in this case the term "Awesome" is not meant as a reference to cool, neat, hip or "the bee's knees," but rather the sheer size of the effect created.

Horrifying... we have come too close and it still is there to pop it's head

Horrifing in the fact that it is designed for mass death but that is not why i posted it. Do you not see the beauty in the way it forms. The way earth and sky come together. The way that the fire blossoms into the heavens. I hesitated in posting it because i had a pretty good idea that it would be ill recieved because of the aftermath that is caused when used on a civilization.

I personally see no beauty in it.....just destruction, death, and finality

This is how I see it too. I love the beauty of swords, love to fire guns, am mesmerised by fire, am fascinated with storms. However, this does not mean that I do not respect and abhor the destruction these things cause.

I'm with ya, I always liked watching those things explode.

It looks just like a BLU Fuel Air explosive.
If you have ever seen one used, it is not pretty at all.
It's scary as hell.

I'm with you Phil. I served on a boomer. At the time I really gave no thought as to what would happen if we had to Do our Duty! I still cringe whenever I think of the drills that were not announced as drills.

This is a relatively low yield explosion. The point of view of the camera is approximately 2 miles away. A high grade Hydrogen unit has a blast radius of 50 miles which is roughly 8,000 square miles of area. Just think, very soon Iran will have a nice compact version in the Middle East! Not looking forward to that prospect.

According to Websters dictionary:
Awesome - Inspiring awe. Characterized by expressing awe.
So yes awesome would be the word.

Strange to think that 30 years ago I was growing up with that hanging over us (and we were learning about the theory of global cooling in geography, which seems pretty weird now...)

Part of the lyrics from a Kingston Trio song named, "The Merry Minuet".
"But we can be tranquil and thankful and proud, for man's been endowed with a mushroom-shaped cloud.
And we know for certain that some lovely day, someone will set the spark off... and we will all be blown away."

Israel already has a couple hundred of them and Iran hasn't attacked any of its neighbors or dropped white phosphorus on anyone.

By there was always the absolute safety of hiding under your desk at school right? No atomic blast could penetrate that half inch of pine.
Atomic energy is interesting, but it's really a gateway drug for astrophysics. I wish I had the time to take some Astrophysics courses just because that stuff is so damned interesting.

We had a government booklet called "Protect and Survive" - had great advice like 'after the alert, make sure you turn of the gas and electricity and close the windows'.

LOL - my degree was in A/P - loved it. So many 'wow' moments. The theory behind Supernova stunned me. We'd be talking that a star would spend X billion years in this phase, then that phase, then it would start the final phase which would take...
... 25 years followed by a few minutes of core collapse then Kaboom.
By stellar terms, not even a split second from massive nuclear furnace to expanding afterglow.

I notice that those with mil tags are the ones that found this horrifying/disturbing.
That should tell us something.
