View Full Version : Why the double edge?

I'm new to DE shaving having finally given up on my Mach 3 due to the crazy price of cartridges and the frightening list of ingredients on the average can of gel/foam.

After mugging up here I bought this Starter Kit (http://www.traditionalshaving.co.uk/mall/productpage.cfm/traditionalshaving/_STA-SOA-NOR/268168/Starter-Kit---Soap) from The Traditional Shaving Company and after three weeks I am very pleased with the results, even if it does take me a little longer.

I am still puzzled, however, as to how to make the best use of both edges of the DE razor.

Does it have two edges simply for longevity and, if so, is there a recommended technique for ensuring equal wear? Or is there some fancy technique for swishing one way and then the other to use both blades?

It's easier to manufacture double edge blades, and the razor comes out symmetrical and balanced. Why do V engines have even numbers of cylinders instead of 3 on one side and 2 on the other?

When I shave, I flip to the other side after one stroke to make the following stroke and then rinse after that. I always change the blade on sunday. I could probably go longer, but at least when I have a set day for a blade change I am consistent. I shave every day too.

Flip and rinse often to get the best out of a blade. Your beard will ditcate how many shaves you get out of a particular brand blade. Once you have settled on a specific blade or blades that you like then you will be better able to determine how many shaves you are comfortable with per blade.

Thanks for the explanation (should have read the New User FAQ (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?p=1747332#post1747332)). That now makes perfect sense.

I make a pass on one side until the blade is full of hair/lather, then flip to the other. After both are full I rinse and start the process over.
