I'm looking to buy my first boar brush, for soap bowl-lathering. This one looks like it will fit the bill: Omega 50107 (http://westcoastshaving.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=28_39_63&products_id=479). Any opinions?

My only experience is lathering cream w/ a Tweezerman.

My opinion is the inexpensive Omegas are the way to go if you're looking to try out a boar. Boar isn't for everyone. You might like it, you might not, but at least you're not out a lot of cash.

It's a big, honking brush with a high loft. I have a similar one, 10049 I think. I like it, but the tall loft made me seek out two others with shorter lofts. I still use all three though.

+1

I have an Omega Pro #49 as well. It's a wonderful brush, easily as good as my badger brush, but the Omega Pro brushes are huge. My badger brush is 22mm, and the Omega Pro is a gigantic brush in comparison.

Unless you really want a huge boar brush, you might want to go with a smaller brush like the $9 Omega 10066 as the loft is much shorter.

I have been looking to replace/ supplement the Omega Pro. I bought the HJM/ Muhle boar brush from Shaveabuck, which is about the same size as my 22mm badger, but have been very disappointed in it's overall quality.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm really drawn to the long handle, and handle shape. If it's too big, I guess I'll just have to get another. :biggrin1:

EDIT: I couldn't resist. Wen't ahead and bought it.

I'm sure you will like it. I still use my pro, I just wanted to supplement it with some different lofts in Boar, as I have the same variety in Badger.

I've got one of the 50107's on the way from West Coast and can't wait to give it a try.

For anyone interested, I found a very similar model at shoeboxshave. Larger knot and higher loft than the 50107, this thing must be huge! Nicer looking, I think, with the chrome ringlet. Though it is listed $24 versus $10 for the 50107 brush at WCS. Dunno if it's 20106 or 20107, as they have it listed both ways: Omega 20106/20107 (http://shoeboxshaveshop.com/omega-20107--beautiful-professional-model--another-big-br20107.html)

Impressive selection overall at shoeboxshave!
