View Full Version : Make toothbrushing less of a chore?

So, if wet-shaving can turn a chore into an enjoyable activity, can anything do that for toothbrushing?

Seriously though, how about a Sonic care tooth brush? I actually like brushing my teeth with it.

Yeah, Tom's of Maine makes some neat toothpaste flavors. Cinnamon-clove is a favorite of mine. That and a quality electric toothbrush are the best improvements that I know of. It's still not as fun as shaving though.

You could always try a natural bristle toothbrush.

Well, if you shower in the morning you can at least make it convenient one time out of the day. Shampoo and Condition as normal, but leave your conditioner in as your brush your teeth for softer hair. Flossing is sort of hard in the shower, but if you get into a groove of flossing it can take under a minute.

I find a manual toothbrush more exciting and controlable than these new-fangled electric ones.

Keep in mind, these aren't huge factors, but they make it a little more enjoyable to the daily grind

Oscillating Spongebob toothbrush like my mom puts in my Christmas stocking some years. Every brushing is an undersea adventure with my best pal. Oh we have a time, scrubbing my teeth, making Rush Limbaugh (or was it Pat Robertson?) question our sexual preference. Flipping crabby patties. I don't really watch Spongebob, although I know several men my age that do. One a couple years younger I believe has seen every episode (and there's like a thousand episodes).

And get off my lawn! Damn kids...

This isn't the first time I've mentioned this, but I love B&B. I got quite a chuckle out of most of the responses.

While I understand it feels like a chore, since I started taking "recommended" care of my teeth, I haven't had one cavity. Anything to keep the drill away is  from me.

A lot of members swear that ending with Bay rum makes the shave end as a luxury and not a chore.

Maybe a finish with a shot of Capt. Morgan might spice up your routine?

We can have forums on dark vs. light rum, we could have Method Shot advocates vs. 4-sip?

Indeed. And to be assured of a quality manual toothbrush, you should know that Kent, (http://www.kentbrushes.com/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=8&cat=View%20All&sppp=100) and D.R. Harris, (http://www.drharris.co.uk/search.php?term=Toothbrushes) and Rooney (http://www.classicshaving.com/catalog/item/1379125/4643907.htm) all offer them. So does TOBS (http://www.tayloroldbondst.co.uk/acatalog/Taylor_s_On_line_TOOTHBRUSHES_10.html) but neither of the other 'T's do, at least on line.

Plisson, alas, does not. They do make hairbrushes, though.

I'm actually 21! I got one of those $6 electric colgate toothbrushes years back and realized my teeth were getting more yellow with it. Manual ones have nuttier designs, so I figure more R&D is going into those

SliceOfLife

Yellowing really only comes from certain things. Most notably smoking, a few illnesses, etc. Just having a crappy brush if you avoid those won't cause yellowing. And I doubt that the best brush in the world can keep a chain-smoker from getting yellow teeth (though it maybe helps a little for a light smoker who brushes frequently, I'm not sure, you'd have to ask a dentist who smokes I suppose).

I've got a Sonicare and love it. Every once in a while I'll try a standard one that the dentist gives me after a cleaning just so it doesn't totally go to waste, but they just end up being used for razor cleaning...
I personally like the Toms Fennel flavor with propolis and myrh toothpaste.

The OP wanted to know how to make oral care as exciting as wet shaving. Here's my story . . .

First, spend several years not flossing unless you have food stuck between your teeth . . . and skip a few cleanings because you don't have cavities and are too macho to have a hygienist scold you for not flossing daily.

Then, develop abscesses and start losing teeth at the rate of one every nine months or so. Listen to your dentist tell you what a shame it is that your perfect teeth with no cavities are going to fall out because your gums are shot and your jawbone is deteriorating.

Finally, take your dentist's recommendation, and see a periodontist. This is a special dentist who will make you feel just as crappy as your Drill Sergeant did during Basic Training. You will come to love and respect her/him just as you did your Drill Instructor. (You should not have to do pushups, though.)

You will spend several thousand dollars for scalings, deep cleanings, surgeries, and visits to the periodontist's specially trained hygienist every three months. (She will also scold you for not flossing enough.) You will spend a hundred dollars on a special ultrasonic toothbrush, with replacement heads costing about $15. You will learn how to floss with your eyes closed, and spend every waking moment that your mouth isn't otherwise occupied with a rubber-tipped tool massaging your gums, which probably don't bleed as much now as they used to.

After this is all said and done, your cavity-free teeth can remain firmly planted in your jawbone, with what remains of your gum tissue surrounding them. You will spend as much (or more) of your daily time maintaining your teeth as you do shaving. You will enjoy this daily routine, secure in the knowledge that if you regress, your periodontist will crawl inside your mouth and kick your ass from within!!

The alternative is to have 'em yanked out and get dentures. Then you can stick your falsies in Polident every night while you attempt to play Casanova with SWMBO.

Yes. Your toothbrush can't reach certain areas of your mouth. Additionally, using a mouthwash is every bit as important as brushing or flossing as there are certain areas where a brush or floss just wont reach.

My dentist told me that mouthwashes didn't actually do very much. He said I'd be better off spending the time brushing my teeth longer, rather than spend the time swirling mouthwash around. Who knows the truth?
