Iv'e been on a bit of a Lavender kick lately.

Thanks,

I think that the 50 ml bottle from Caldey Abbey is a splash. The 100 ml is a spray.

Agua Lavanda Puig is also an excellent splash (although not technically an aftershave).

Thayer's Lavander Witchhazel. Love the smell, and it helps keep my skin from drying out during the winter time.

Santa Maria Novella makes a lavender splash that is wonderful smelling and fantastically functional in equal measure.

+1 its smell is pure lavender it does its job and it fades after a little while. Try this one, my girlfriend loves it, and the smell of it on me. It's witch hazel so its a good aftershave splash and toner.

+1 on SCS Lavender. I'm not much on Lavender + it's probably my favorite splash from Sue.

AOS Lavender makes a really nice gel + balm, and L'Occitane makes a good lavender balm with black pepper.

I've heard good things about the Santa Maria Novella lavender, but haven't had the opportunity to try.

Yes. It's part of their After Shave Lotion (http://lafcony.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=lafcony&Product_Code=10184) line. BTW, the picture on the Lafco website is outdated. The label on the bottle has changed, in case you get it and wonder what happened.

And, uh, are you calling me Fancy Pants, or is that your nickname?

The SCS sounds good as well.

I'm in Canada though so shipping is a bit of a challenge.

Dearest Horatio aka Fancy Pants After Shave Man who has something that I do not,

damn you for posting that link. now, I want to try it. Envy is not becoming. Evbo, what's your verdict on SMN?

Warmest Regards,

I checked the review section Horatio - that was a well written review. Nice job:thumbup:

Evbo, what's your verdict on SMN?

Honestly, I've not used it.

However, on the strength of Horatio's love review I went to a nearby store, rubbed a bit into my skin & had a sniff or 2. True to his review there's a dark, anchoring base note to this stuff -- maybe tobacco -- that's very much to his liking but not at all to mine. So I passed. However, that's from a scent perspective only. Quality-wise, I'm sure it's top notch. It certainly felt very nice when I applied it to the back of my hand.

I think if that note were any more pronounced or obtrusive, I probably wouldn't like it, either. As it is, though, the scent strikes me as well balanced, both in terms of the notes themselves, and in the strength relative to the amount needed for application. The scent fades down pretty quickly to only subtly perceptible levels, such that I find the occasional whiff of the dark note appealing. That's my take, of course; to each his own. I'm just glad they've switched away from that sickly sweet, feminine mess they made for a brief time a couple years ago.

I was just commenting to my wife, as we headed out on our date night, that I wish I could afford to wear this stuff every day. She likes it best and so do I, but at $55 a bottle it is for special occasions only.

Yeah, it's pretty spendy. I keep trying to find something I like as well for less money. However, when I think of all the various things I've spent money on that I don't like as well, I might have ultimately been dollars ahead if I'd just kept on with the SMN. By the way, if your bottle is the one you got way back when you first reviewed it, I recommend you sample newer versions before buying, as the scent has changed a few times over.

Edit: I see I've already mentioned the scent change in my post above. Sorry if I'm sounding like a broken record; I don't always remember where I post what. Oh well, I guess it doesn't hurt to say it one more time.

I picked mine up a couple of years ago at the SMN farmacia in Florence. It has the paper label. I hope it hasn't changed too much.

I laughed as I said to my wife, "I wish I could find something this good for about $10" For some reason, a bottle of Aqua Velva, which gets used almost daily seems to last forever, but the SMN seems to go faster even when metering it out only for special occasions.

Excuse me while I put on my geek hat for a moment. I have personally come across two different lavender a/s scent formulations appearing in the bottle with the paper label. The first was lot number 1801/29 (appears on the bottom of the box, as well as the bottle), and it was the stuff I fell in love with - very green and austere, but masculine and clean. The second was 1901/35, and it was the sweeter, more feminine stuff I referred to above.

The stuff in the newer, silkscreened bottle is lot number 2510T, and it is different yet again, considerably better (imo) than the 1901/35 stuff, but not the same as the 1801/29 lot, either. It's a bit more like true lavender, but not as green, and with a darker underpinning, as Evbo and I were discussing. If you do end up ordering a sample, be clear on what you're getting. I ordered a sample from Lafco in L.A., and they were still decanting from an old formulation tester bottle, despite the fact they didn't have any left in stock.
