Hey guys - I'm still fairly new to traditional wet-shaving, still working through my blade sampler pack. Here's my setup:

- Derby blades (my favorite out of Derby, Merkur, Astra, Feather)
- 1904 Merkur Classic Open-comb DE razor
- Generic Pure Black Badger brush
- Col. Ichabod Conk Bayrum soap
- Dollar-store latte coffee mug

My question is regarding my current technique of lathering. I start my filling my clean, empty mug with hot water and soaking my brush. I then empty the water out and give my brush a light shake to get most of the water out. Then I rub the brush in the soap to get some soap on the bristles. Then I move my brush in the mug and start making lather. This technique works okay, but I'm wondering what others do.

Seems to me that some of you may lather direct on the face and skip lathering in the bowl. Do others leave the soap puck in the mug and get re-wet it for each shave?

Thanks in advance!

Check out the making lather from soap tutorial. Dry the brush more; I squeeze the water out of it. Then, load more soap into the brush.

Then, begin to lather it in a bowl. Add drops of water at a time, swirling until it is incorporated; then add more. Keep doing this until the lather is the way you like it.

There's the lather tutorial, I do pretty much exactly that and get a good 1/4 inch lather to spread across my face.
