View Full Version : Greatest Superhero

A friend and I had one of the classic school boy arguments today - who is the greatest superhero of all time?
Clearly, it's Batman. (Perfect time to use this :batman: )
Thoughts?

Batman is just a guy with a lot of gadgets, not a superhero. Take away the cape and belt and he's just a goth with a mask on. Superman doesn't count because he's an alien. I'll go with Super Mario. You can't really beat a little Italian plumber who can spit fireballs and slay dragons.

Batman, without a doubt.
He's a regular guy, but he has some bad ass toys and kicks all sorts of ass!

Wonderwoman
Hey I'm a chick, I have to go with a chick!!! LOL

Look up in the air, it's a bird, no it's a plane, no it's Superman- he was the greatest to me. With the origin story and the powers, beats the rest. Wonder woman is definitely the best female.

Superman doesn't count because he's an alien.
I would just like to second that point.
EDIT: Natchez...that wasn't directed at you. It was more of a generalized statement!

Wolverine, with a stipulation. It has to be the original Wolverine, prior to the character getting waaaaaaay too much exposure and being written by 3000 writers, all trying to put their personal 'spin' on him. Not to mention importing him to every comic that ever was to boost sales.
I won’t rag on anybody’s hero, because I know they meant something personal and wonderful to us all. That said, Wolverine is mine. (Still have my Wolverine #1, graded 9.6 by the CGC and encased in air-tight hard plastic with certificate. Ditto for my first appearance of Gambit!)

Gotta be the Marvel Comics Spiderman! He gets the crap thumped out of him, and still keeps on cracking jokes!

Spiderman is the greatest super hero that America has ever produced. I know because I joined the Merry Marvel Marching Society in the 6th grade. Have the certificate to prove it on the wall.

I'm not a comic book type guy, but superman is obviously the supreme superhero. Every other so-called super hero can be killed by a bullet, I got bullets, anyone 'round here got kryptonite? I didn't think so, case closed. Warning, response to this ultimatum may trigger a full fledge nerd alert!!:biggrin1:

Green Lantern thumbs down; Guardian of the Universe(who can easily whip up a batch of kryptonite anytime!)
In darkest day,
In blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight,
BEWARE MY POWER, GREEN LANTERN'S LIGHT!!!!!
The recent DVD of his origins has to be seen on blu-ray.

MacGyver wins, easilly.
Who else can make a tactical nuclear missile with a swiss pocket knife, some duct tape and a bicycle pump.
(After making it, he would of course immideately disarm it due to his very lovable non-violent approach)

It absolutely has to be someone created by Jack Kirby. I'd say Captain America. He was Wolverine before Wolverine. Great in his Golden Age and Silver Age incarnations. He survived the Nazis, the weird turn taken by writers during the McCarthy era, and the stumbles of the current Marvel bullpen. You can find him in unbelievable panels by Kirby and Steranko (check out Steranko's great homage to Frazetta down below). He doesn't have any alien or atomic powers to fall back on, no trust fund to spend, no mansion to mope around in. He's the hero the other comic book heroes' respect, a guy who instantiates what regular Joes like Jack Kirby thought made a man great. Gotta be Cap.

I am tempted to go with Batman. He is awesome! But, the argument can be made he is a normal guy. So, I guess I will go with Wolverine.

As a kid growing up in the 50's and 60's, I read tons of superhero comics. I always felt like Superman was #1 and Batman #2. They were close to each other, but way ahead of all the others.

I have to categorize this one.
Superhuman vs. Regular Human
Superhuman
1. Superman (Super Human-like Kryptonian)
2. Green Lantern
3. Captain America (Super soldier serum)
Regular
Batman - enough said.

Superman? Really? He may not be killed by bullets, but throw the handgun at him and he gets all flinchy. At least on the TV series. Gotta be The Incredible Hulk. C'mon, Incredible is part of his name for heaven sakes.

DC:
Batman. Batman has defeated Superman in combat before, he's the single best. He's also essentially superhuman because of his mental and physical abilities that far surpass normal men.
Marvel:
The Sentry-he has the power of a million exploding suns, and is the only one to fight the Hulk at his strongest to a standstill.

As a collector of Superman Comics since 1978 (even the horrible John Byre era fiasco) I will have to say SUPERMAN :001_tt2:
Superman could melt Batman and Spiderman with his heat vision or simply rip them in half if he wanted to.
