I've been using a variation of Kyle's pre-shave routine including the hot towel for two or three minutes. I have light to medium beard density and very sensitive skin. I don't have problems with raging razor burn, I've got that in check by watching the pressure and blade angle, but I usually get at least a bit of mild skin irritation from just about every shave. I'm wondering if the hot towel is just too much for my skin, increasing the chance of skin irritation from the blade. Mind you, I'm not using scalding hot water, just moderately hot. What do you guys think? Can the hot towel soften sensitive skin too much?

Might not be your shave as much as a reaction to a product. What soaps are you using? what other products-? what blades?
Can't help much, however here is all the help I can provide. I would go to see a dermotologist and tell him/her what your routine is like and see if he/she can give you any pointers. Don't mean to knock this forum or its members, but typically we at Badger know the shaving process very well, however your Demotiologist will understand the deamnds of dry skin a lot better than any of us will. I would take the results of your trip to the demotologist and check the results with Badger forum members and run with the result. This way you get he best of both worlds.

You might try an application of preshave oil before the hot towel....it has worked well for me, especially during the cold weather when my skin tends to be dry/sensitive.

What kind of pre-shave oil is recommended and exactly how do you use it?

I like the one I make :wink2: and I usually apply it in the shower and let it marinate my beard while I'm in there, or just before applying hot towel. Takes care of any dry skin right quick.
