Gents,
A few of us here in Austin are considering putting together a meetup for wet shavers in the area or anyone who cares to join us. We hosted a gathering back in 2008 and had a great time despite the mistake on my part of planning on graduation weekend.
No specifics are planned yet, but we are shooting for Saturday March 6th. Depending on how many might be able to make, we're hoping to put together a lunch, maybe a chance to swap some shaving wares, maybe some razor honing discussions/demonstrations or whatever you're interested in. Definately open to suggestions.
Drop me a PM if you might be interested. We had a lot of fun last time and would love to make it better this go around!

I will put in for a tenative maybe on this one. I have plenty of reasons to go to Austin but my wife may not want me to travel that weekend since I will be heading back to work a few days later. Plus, she is not real keen on 4 hour road trips.....maybe I can work this from a different angle though......

Just an update:
We're working on getting a location for the meet nailed down here soon. I am thinking that something like a BBQ joint would appeal to the wider audience.. and we have some good ones here in Austin that I think would be accomodating to us. Plus that will be relatively inexpensive for everyone. If you have suggestions, make them now!
I'm also working on getting another vendor involved that might like to join us. Last time we had a good turnout and everyone got to take home some goodies to enjoy. Hoping we can top it this go around.
Again, if you are interested in please let me know so I can start getting an idea of how many can make it.

I'm not familiar with very many BBQ joints down town, unless their is a Rudy's downtown.
Rudy's get my vote for BBQ. I know its a chain, but I think its pretty good. A bonus is that they have huge picnic tables that can easily seat a lot of people.

County Line is a restaurant (waiters, etc.) whereas Rudy's is cafeteria style and less formal. Not to say County Line is too formal!
Might need reservation for a group at CL but not at Rudy's.
This is based on one visit to CL about 4-5 years ago so I may be off a bit.

I agree, but they do have a great patio area by the water on the back side of the restaurant that would be excellent, weather permitting.
I love Rudy's though!

Salt Lick sounds appealing to me as it's my personal favorite. The new one at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock would be easy to get to and I think they do have private areas. The one in Driftwood is the best, but it is a bit out there. Unforunately it's either way north or way south with them.
Last time we did Poke e Joes and it was ok. We had a seperate dining area and buffet line that worked out to only be like $10 a person roughly. Unfortunately, the food wasn't the best but it's the only thing that was available to us that weekend. Not bad, but not great. We'll also look in to Rudy's and Smokey Mo's, which are very similar. I think Mo's has a private dining area.

Alright, we have our location selected!
We will be meeting at Threadgill's (north location) on Saturday March 6th at 12:30. We have a private area reserved for us to use and you are free to order whatever you want off the menu. For those not familiar, Threadgill's is the Austin institution for southern home cooking with a big menu and something for everyone.
http://www.threadgills.com/locations.cfm
A few of us will be there early to greet everyone. We also plan on having a bit of a swap meet, show and tell, whatever... so bring anything you care to share. Two vendors will be joining us as well. Lee Cantor of Lee's Razors and Charles Roberts of Enchante. I'm sure they are planning on bring some things as well.
Look forward to seeing you there!

Woohoo!! Just a little over a week away!
As for the details: We are at the Threadgill's North (6416 N. Lamar Blvd. Austin, TX 78752) in the Lonestar Room. This is a private area that seats up to 30 according to the information they provided. I haven't seen it in person yet, but should be perfect. Threadgill's was cool enough to let us use the room with no stipulations on meal minimums or menu choices. We are all free to order whatever we want and they said they will run seperate checks, so that makes those details easier. Many thanks to Aquanin for making the calls and working out this arrangement for us all.
I'm working with our vendor friends on bringing over some goodies. No details available yet, but at our last meetup Lee brought a killer goodie bag with him. I'm sure this time will be just as good if not better. I'm also hoping to put together a few good door prizes that shouldn't dissapoint. And no forum meet can be complete without some trading and show and tell.
Last time I counted we were at about 26 guys, minus a few that won't be able to make it, we should still have a great crowd.

It was a pleasure to meet you Bill! I look forward to trying out my wonky new Wilkinson tonight, so thanks again!
My pleasure as well, Tony. And I'll hope the Wilkinson doesn't self-eject your blade with that crazy door! For me, it's a Cyril R. Salter French Vetiver shave in the morning...:thumbup1:

GENTLEMEN, Thank you for a warm welcome to a Kalifornian. It was a pleasure to meet you all. The wife and I are enjoying our Austin stay and for me this get together was a high point. Thanks to all the organizers and thanks for the door prizes. I must admit that my gift from Charles of the Method shaving is a bit daunting but I will figure it out. If you are ever in my neck of the woods, We welcome you. I have some stills that I will try to get to you of the group.

Gentlemen,
The get together at Threadgills was certainly a great way to spend a Saturday. Thanks to all of you who did the organizing; thanks to all of you who pitched in souvenirs; and, finally, thanks for all the great conversation and fellowship.
Unfortunately, when I was asked, "What did you buy?" I told my Immediate Supervisor the truth about not being able to resist Lee's Simpsons 2 band, so my welcome home after a 400+ mile round trip was a little chilly!

As for your new brush and its affect on domestic climate....it'll pass <I hope>.

All I can say, Bill, is that I spent a while teetering back and forth between the two brushes - and, as happy as I am with the T2, while I was driving home I still had a lot of remorse because of not stepping up to the Anniversary brush.
Congratulations!

I had a great time at the meet up. It was nice to put some faces to the board names. I met a great group of guys and hope to maybe do this again in the future. Some neat stuff was passed around. I enjoyed looking at the straight razors that Russell had there. The scales were just awesome.
Thanks Mike and Russell for putting that together. Thanks Lee for the freebies and great deals of the day. I was really tempted to pick up that Tulip... but I graciously accepted the Simpsons Colonel door prize instead :w00t:

What's the manufacturer and model of the razor?
Thanks!

They are indeed. So much so that I have got some razors that going to end up on BST :blushing: I think they give a great shave. I find it easy to maneuver as well. I don't find it aggressive by any means, it might even be considered mild. I just find it a smooth, well balanced shaver.
