Well, after reading all of the advice here and on the SRP, I finally had my first real shave at the ripe young age of 20. Here's how it came about:

It all started when I received a brush and bowl stand/set for christmas, from my father-in-law type person. After this, I began to get a bit more interested in traditional shaving, especially with straight razors. After much netsurfing, I found this place and the SRP, and began my reading frenzy.

Flash forward a week or so: I'm antique hunting with my girlfriend, and I find a black Gillette adjustable for $12.50, so I grab it, get home, clean it, and realize I've got no blades! Ach!!

The next day I'm off to walmart, as much as I dislike shopping there, to get some Personnas and mink oil for the strop I found on the same trip. Once safely back at my domicile, I loaded up a blade, amazed at it's thinness, and grabbed my brush, bowl, Neem oil soap, and styptic pencil and headed for the designated shaving area.

One pass with the grain, and one more against was enough to leave me *quite* smooth, and the best part was that my face didn't have that uncomfotable-kinda-tight-all-over irritation that I *always* got from a cartridge. I was so used to it that I didn't even know the damn thing was pulling before cutting, and the feeling of using a *real* razor was just amazing. And, I only nicked myself once! (w00t for the styptic pencil, as it was a big one ... just got going a little too fast for a second ;))

So, there you have it. I'm never using a cartridge razor again if I can help it, and I can't wait to get my straight razor back from being sharpened... I never thought I would actually look forward to shaving, but it's just so much less... painful now, and, being that it actually takes some skill, is a lot more fun. Thanks to everyone here for a great resource for anyone looking to get a much better shave!

Welcome aboard m00t.

I wish I had known about this stuff when I was 20. I spent years with crummy shaves and all the problems folks here discuss.

You're in the learning stage, just make sure that you read Leisureguy's shaving blog and view Mantic's shaving videos on YouTube; they'll be most informative and will save you a lot of grief.

And the woman in your life, what did she have to say? Bet she was overjoyed at the result. Next step is to order yourself a LetterK sampler pack. All DE blades are interchangeable so get the LetterK and try out all of the different brands and see which suits you best. Me makes little difference, could do this with sand paper and would come out the same.

Hey, m00t, welcome to B&B.

It's amazing how switching to the proper tools can take something that used to be a chore and turn it into something fun and enjoyable, isn't it?

Good luck, keep reading, and good shaving!
