Hello. I've been lurking here for a bit, and I've found a lot of useful information so I decided to come out of hiding and register.

I converted from fantastic plastic disposables and shaving cream in a can to a shaving brush, soap, and a Super Speed (1950, I think) several months ago and will not ever go back. :001_tt2:

Honestly, I don't remember what prompted me to make the change...probably just an article I came across on the web somewhere. I remembered watching my grandfather shaving with a safety razor, mug, and soap, and I remember going to the barber shop and watching the barber with his straight razor...and I guess the idea appealed to me.

Anyway, I jumped in with both feet and now I actually look forward to shaving everyday...imagine that. :001_smile

Thanks for all the welcome.

I found this site while searching for some aftershave advice. I ended up getting a bottle of Pinaud Clubman which I like just fine. The moment I opened it the scent took me back to the local barbershop I went to as a kid.

I started a few months ago when I recalled that there was a safety razor somewhere in the house (and my wife actually remembered where it was :blushing:) passed on down from my father-in-law. I picked up set of blades at the local super market, I don't know what kind, but I think I got the last box they had...they haven't restocked since. I used up my remaining canned shave cream and then...

I got the Van Der Hagen kit to see how I would like mixing up my own lather and using a shave brush. I haven't tried the soap that came with it yet because I picked up a puck of Conks Amber at the same time. The bowl fits nicely in my hand. With the very hard water I have, I wasn't able to get a really good lather with the boar brush so I ordered up a badger brush...the Edwin Jager tortoise. What a difference! Although I'm sure practice had something to do with it too.

I'm finally getting the consistent results I hoped for now that I'm more comfortable with the use of the safety razor. I would nick or burn myself now and then but I've got the angle thing down a lot better now and I finally learned not to apply much pressure and let the razor do its job.
