I've got a 100 gram alum block (Shavex brand) that I picked up from Classic Shaving.com and I like the size for home use. But we travel occasionally, and I'd like to get my hands on a smaller block to travel with.

Does anyone know of a place that carries smaller blocks? All of the ones that I see are 100-115 or so grams, so the size would be similar to what I currently have.

I just ordered this one today.......

Can't beat the price and clearly labeled so won't be busted at customs for having some odd crystal meth looking substance.:001_smile

Either one is good. You can also use it as an under arm deodorant, it works great for that, so you won't have to carry an extra item when you travel. :thumbup1:

For my travel use, I went to my local Whole Foods and picked up a small "crystal deodorant" stick in a very compact and convenient container for about $4.00. I would give you the particulars but, after confirming that it was indeed potassium alum only, I peeled off the sticker with all the info (yes, I'll admit I'm a little OCD at times!)

Go to your local health foods store; I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for both easily and inexpensively. The only thing to make sure of is that the product you choose is ONLY potassium alum (not aluminum alum), as I've heard that the aluminum alum stings much like a styptic would.

Another option, if there's an Indian foods market around, is to give them a try. I picked up an alum bar for $0.99 there which is smaller than you describe in your original post. Keep it in a plastic soap container, or cut it into as small a size as you'd like for whatever container you have that's handy.

Its ammonium alum you need to watch out for. Both Potassium alum and ammonium alum contain aluminum. The ammonium is usually used for deodorant so watch out when you buy those little Crystal Deodorants sticks.
