View Full Version : NYC Meet-Up and Potlatch Gathering 1/29

Attention all NYC B&B-ers:

After three years of this great hobby, I am left with a few things I no longer use or need, and instead of selling these modest items on B/S/T I've decided to give them away in the spirit of the potlatch ceremony (see definition below).

My fiancee is going out of town the weekend of 1/29, which leaves me solo that Friday night. I propose that we meet up at one of my favorite midtown watering holes, Rattle and Hum on 14 East 33rd Street (right near the Empire State Building):

http://rattlenhumbar.wordpress.com/

I will have a few things to give away:

-various blades that I've tried and no longer use (I'm sticking with Red Packs and Dorco ST-301s_
-half a bottle of Spanish Floid (maybe we'll have to raffle this off)
-1/4 bottle of Dominica Bay Rum
-a slightly used cake of Provence Sante
-my own homemade tallow shaving soap, which I prefer to any other soap on the market
-some of my homemade regular bath soap bars
-anything else I can think of

After reading everyone's posts for years, I'd really enjoy some fellow B&B-ers in person. Maybe we can post some photos on Facebook, and if you guys have anything you'd like to give away you can follow suit.

I will be at Rattle and Hum at 6:00 on Friday, January 29th. Let me know if I should look out for you - it will be a lot of fun. Best,

Jim

Potlatch:
The potlatch is a festival or ceremony practiced among Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. At these gatherings a family or hereditary leader hosts guests in their family's house and holds a feast for their guests. The main purpose of the potlatch is the re-distribution and reciprocity of wealth. Typically the potlatching is practiced more in the winter seasons as historically the warmer months were for procuring wealth for the family, clan, or village, then coming home and sharing that with neighbors and friends.

My brother went to University of Virginia and during the Midwinters sessions down in Charlottesville one of the fraternities would have a potlatch ceremony, where they would climb up on the roof of the house and throw new stuff (walkmen, CDs, etc.) to the crowd waiting below. It seemed like a crazy thing to do - anyway, NYC has a great Museum of the American Indian (a Smithsonian museum) and they have a big exhibit on the tribes of the Northwest and their potlatch traditions.

I'm glad a few of you are thinking of coming - let's keep in touch as the date approaches - you won't be disappointed with Rattle n' Hum, it's a great place.

Reading through the comments, I'm curious if this is still billed as a potlatch (i.e. one with plenty redistributes to those with less) or has become more of a potluck (i.e. each person brings something, gets something else).

Galileo was wrong originally because he didn't realize the elliptical orbit of the planets. Kepler figured out that the planets revolve in an elliptical orbit defined by two points. After that, Galileo adjusted the heliocentric theory and explained how the two points were actually Louis Pasteur and the Cambridge Chemists.

As a footnote, Hailey gets credit for being right once in 70 years, hence the occasional drive by around the corner to AoS to pick up some happy soap tails.

I will try to arrive before 6 if I can. Huracan, sorry to hear you won't be able to make it - we will take some pix. So here is the lineup as far as I know:

Jim - Castlebar
Lou - DunEdinRanger
Craig - Craig87c
Steve - SiBurning
Anonymous - Anonymous (A very quiet member and Steve's friend)
Castlebar's brother

All I can say is Lou, Craig, and Steve are going to be walking away with a lot of potlatch: homemade soaps, shaving soaps, 1/2 bottle of Floid, blades, etc. Any other takers for a few beers after work in NYC tonight?

See you guys soon....

Jim

That's all I need is more shaving soap. I'll probably bring a bunch of stuff, too.

Mike will be there. He is a new member.

I'm still planning on going to Pasteur's first. I've met Steve before so I know I can find him. If you see two shave geeks at Pasteur's, I'm not Steve, I'm the other one. :biggrin1:

I'll be at Pasteurs too, so just look for another "not Steve" while you're there.

Sadly, I don't think I'm going to be able to make it tonight.
I hope to meet you gents sometime soon, though.

Marc,

You missed a great time. I would like to thank Castlebar for putting this together. It was nice to put faces and voices to the names behind the avatars.

Did anyone else bring a camera, or just use mine? I'll post pictures tomorrow. Looking through the picture, there's not a lot that I feel are worth posting. There's only a few shots of goodies, a couple of the crowd and waitress, one of the beer menu on the wall, and a lot of geeky looking dudes standing around talking.

If you were there, please post impressions of the meet. How it was meeting people. What we did. Any interesting conversations or impressions you got that's different that what you can get online, with the idea to give people a sense of what it's like being with other badgers and bladers. Also, what goodies you got. Or anything else that might be interesting or make others jeal... err... encourage other members to meet.

At this point, I'd like to report that the gentlemen were indeed gentlemen, and put enough money on the table to cover the dinner bill, with $30 left over to help support B&B. I'll send that over as soon as I figure out how to do that.

I have photos of SI Burning with evil yelllow teeth, and Castlebar with "He Who Shall Not Be Named" (I can't remember Craig's S/N) looking at SI Burning with confusion on their faces.

I believe I took the photo of the waitress. :001_smile

The first and most important thing I learned from these guys was that if SiBurning says to not eat the food at a bar, listen to him! That turkey sandwich was a killer...

It was great meeting you guys! I'm proud of the fact that I look like a shavegeek already (at least according to DunEdinRanger). Had a great discussion on the future of iPhone vs. Android, saw a nameless someone doublefist Russian Imperial stout, great boar vs. badger discussions, and a lot more.

I hadn't really planned on coming home with anything...by the time I'd left Pasteur's, that goal was erased! But I was PIFed a lot of stuff: scary Chinese blades by DunEdinRanger, blades and homemade shave and bathsoap by Castlebar, and a literal ton of soaps and creams by SiBurning.

Altogether, I had a great night, and would love to do it again. I'm already putting together a PIF box to repay the community and I'm on my way to contribute to B&B. Thanks, guys, you make this place amazing.

Three of us met at Pasteur's and picked up some stuff. I didn't find anything I wanted. It was my day to get rid of stuff, and I was only looking for an acid wash and maybe a non-alcoholic ASB. Then we headed over to Rattle 'N' Hum where another 5 or 6 joined us.

The beer menu at Rattle 'N' Hum (http://rattlenhumbar.wordpress.com/) was pretty extensive (larger image you can actually read (http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/1570/dsc0025yl.jpg))
http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/2338/dsc0025df.jpg

Time went by so fast, I must've had a good time. The menu didn't have the feel of really good Irish Pub food, so I played it safe and went for the steak, which was pretty good. I must've finished the other Stone Russian Imperial Stout. (Nameless indeed!)
http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/876/dsc0015gl.jpg

We had some good schwag.

http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/1014/dsc0027lf.jpg

We also made a few converts, and settled the matter of which types of ladies prefer Trumpers almond over MamaBear's British Leather (and chains). I ran around asking the ladies to smell my goods. They all asked if I was in sales. For the record, most preferred the almond, although the ones that liked the leather were... shall we say... or maybe we'd better not say.
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/7158/dsc0029qv.jpg

I the end, we left a few items on the table as a tip to tempt the waitress. Considering what was actually left over, I'm sure she'll be running back to nair.

I took home two bars of soap and some English Breakfast tea.

Finally, due to the generosity of our members putting a little extra in the till for the bar tab (or maybe it was how the beer affected our arithmetic) we raised $30 to help support B&B.

Seems like a good time was there to be had. I'm sorry I missed it.

(Ended up hostage to a decidedly unscintillating museum function instead.)

Good to see the loot. If this happens again, I'll know there's a market for some pretty great (and rare) teas from the wilds of China... and, of course, I'll be sure to go.

Maybe it could be Freemans Sporting Club (www.freemanssportingclub.com/nyc_barber.htm) for straight shaves followed by drinks at the equally gimmicky Freemans bar?

That is tea in that bag, BTW - this isn't Amsterdam! Thanks to all who made it last night. For a potlatch event it is ironic that I think I came home with more stuff than I gave away - not really, but I gave all my stuff away and took home one of DunEdin's Chinese razor blades, Craig's teas, and a bunch of hard soaps courtesy of Steve - including some Floris which I'm looking forward to trying out. It was so great meeting everyone in person, and there were a bunch of great guys there - hey Zack and Mike, don't forget to register for B and B - no more lurking!

Let me know how my homemade shave soap and bath soap works for everyone, I'm always looking for feedback in order to improve. We should try another meetup this year, there are a lot of guys in NYC area. Wouldn't it be cool to have a B and B convention at a hotel somewhere with breakout sessions so we can share our hobbies? I could teach the soapmaking class, and I would love to learn more about barbecuing and photography from some of the experts here.

All in all an awesome night - thanks to everyone who braved the cold to come out!

The lack of Muppets was very disappointing. I believe it made the waitress cry. Or maybe that was one of the creams Steve asked her to sniff? :001_tt2:

Jim,

You really do look just like your avatar. :) Thanks for organizing it! Next time, I will bring more stuff. I should have brought some GEMS with me.

If you're going to get a hotel, why not just make it the first B&B World Con?

thank you guys for a nice gtg. I met some nice gentlemen and got some tips on how to get better. I had only recently started using a bowl to work up my lather. Just now i used the almond trumpers cream, thank you again, and it not only smells so good I want to eat it, but gives an excellent lather. I look forward to the next gtg! And those chinese blades, be careful, some were rusty, so make sure you're up to date on all your tetanus shots..

Good to have met you Zack, even though you neglected me in that post. You mentioned "nice gentlemen" - surely that didn't include me, or Steve!

Those blades were sealed. I bet they are carbon steel, but since I can't read Chinese characters, I have no idea.

Hey, just throw a date out there and I will be there. I need another potlatch to give away all the schwag I got from SiBurning, and if I have enough time I will whip up another batch of my homemade shave soap...
