I recently traded some razor blades for a Fat Handled Tech and have had some super shaves from it. However all the plating has worn away or been stripped and I am left with a brass and copper razor. I'm looking to get hold of a better specimen, but before I commit myself is there any difference in the shave between the Fat Handled and the Ball End Techs? i.e. aggressiveness, shape of head or ease of handling etc

I prefer the "hand feel" of the fat handle. How the razor feels to you can make a difference in the outcome of the shave. For pure looks, however, I think the fluted ball handle in gold is the best!

The head is basically the same on all Techs. Some have reported a slightly more aggressive result from the later "Travel Techs". I have also heard some say the earliest Techs with the triangle-shaped cutouts in the base plate are also a little more aggressive.

Of course, with a Tech, aggressiveness is relative. Darn things are so gentle and smooth to begin with!

Techs can still be found in outstanding condition for reasonable money. I'm sure you will come upon a pretty one with the handle and finish you prefer!

Post a "Want to Buy" and I'll bet someone will fix you up!

I'm thinking of trying to trade a Merkur HD Open Comb (11C) in excellent condition. Actually mint but without the original packaging/box.

Do you think it would be an appropriate trade for a very good/excellent Fat Handled Tech?

Usually the Merkur sells for just a little more than a comparable condition Tech. You should be able to make that trade.

When you list it, only label it "Mint" if it is basically unused and with the original packaging/case. Otherwise call it Very Good (no wear or marks) to Excellent (looks new but without case, etc.).

Well, since a new HD11C sells for around $40 (US) give or take a quid or two . . . I believe you should be able to find a Tech in your desired condition for half that amount.

Now, if you found a Gold Tech set - Fat Handle with blade safe and case in very good to excellent condition I would say you then would have even value.

I don't have a Tech in that condition or I would take you up on that. I haven't tried the HD11C yet!!

You don't like it?

Thanks for all your help, and especially with how I should list the Merkur.

Basically I bought it without the original box from a very good retail shop who couldn't locate the proper box. Used it twice maximum. Spotless condition.

Will list it as described and as very good condition. Would like tech in very good/excellent condition.

Sound OK?

You can list that as excellent condition since it's basically new. It shouldn't take long for you to come up with a suitable Tech. Good luck.
