Ok so I saw Williams brand soap at my local CVS drug store on sale for 50 cents and I thought I would give it a try, now I don't think it was worth the money. I did follow jims sticky on how to make a proper lather step by step and all I can get out of it is either a sticky clumpy mess that seems to dissolve as soon as I can get enough on my face, or a runny substance that doesn't provide any protection... Nothing in between. Does Willimas need an extra or one less step some place? or is it just not worth the time?

I found one for 99 cents, tried it twice. Lather was airy no mater what I did and would evaporate from one side of my face while lathering the other side. I'm new at this stuff (for being 50+), but VDH and Bieglow have been working just fine for me. Oh, and it's aroma does remind me of high school mens room:w00t:

You can make a good, lasting lather with modern Williams. Soft water helps. Soaking the puck for awhile, even overnight, helps a lot. Loading the brush with a LOT of soap helps.

There are soaps that are less of a chore to lather. The scent is a definite YMMV thing. Some soaps are flat out better performers, and some make a pretty compelling case that with so many other choices out there, why work at conquering Williams at all?

I can only say that there is some satisfaction with getting the beast to behave, and there is also something about using a soap that in name, at least, shared the planet with Sherman, Lee, Grant, Pershing and Patton.

Put some water on the puck before you shower.
Leave your brush wetter than normal.
Work the puck a little longer than with other soaps.
Face lather on a wet face.
This soap works, and it works WELL.
It certainly is NOT for the lazy whip it up and slap it on kind of guy.

Put some water on the puck before you shower.

Or cover a soap mug after using it, so the soap's surface stays soft for tomorrow's shaving.

Leave your brush wetter than normal.I may testify the soap is indeed thirsty.

Work the puck a little longer than with other soaps. In other words I would also say try to build a lather on the puck; kinda like with a typical glycerine soap.

This soap works, and it works WELL.Indeed, and soft water probably helps too. As I live in an area with very soft water, all those negative comments about Williams' MUG sound very strange to me.

Soaking the puck is critical.

#1-Soak puck thoroughly (I suggest dropping it in the toilet for this step)

#2-After letting it soak for an appropraite perriod of time, and this is the key part of the process: flush.

#3-Order some Tabac, AOS, Trumpers, etc. and find out how enjoyable a shave soap can be.:thumbup1:

YMMV
