Break in the new razor shave:

http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/8751/shave20091231web.jpg

eShave Pre-Shave Lavender Oil : eShave Lavender Shave Cream : Plisson Size 8 HMW brush : Robert Williams 8/8 Half-Hollow straight razor in imitation black marble scales : eShave Pre-Shave Lavender Oil Hey, they say you can use it after you shave as well!: eShave White Tea After Shave Cream

Several points:

I don't own stock in eShave; I just found a place that was having fire sale prices on their stuff and loaded up. I am such the pushover for a deal.
I actually shouldn't have shaved today because I already have a screaming case of razor burn constantly making touch-ups whenever I feel a patch of whiskers emerge. Nobody is owning up, but I don't think I'm the only person who's done this.
That said, the Williams shaves like a champ. Despite being the largest and heaviest razor I own (#2 being my TI Le Grelot 6/8), it feels quite comfy and maneuverable, and mows down some of my most stubborn patches of beard (the ones, incidentally, that kept driving me back for more and more touch-ups, BTW) like nothing else I own—except maybe that TI Le Grelot.
But if there was a particular piece of gear or type of goo that really distinguished itself in this shave, it was my little Plisson brush. It's far and away the best latherer I own; but it also applies the lather it generates more readily than any other brush I own. I have a Rooney 3/1 in Super Silvertip and a Kent BLK4 in whatever they call silvertip and while they both lather well—the Kent very much so—often I find myself actually squeezing the brush and applying the lather I get to my face with my hands; otherwise, the lather on my face will be pretty thin except for the the circumferences of the circles I made with the brush to work the lather into the beard.

There, I said it.

Anyway, I don't have to do this with the Plisson. Lather builds up in the bowl, and comes out on my face, the way you figure it should. Now, it might be that this is just a virtue of small brushes and I'd be as happy with a Simpsons Wee Scotsman, but that's not a comparison I've been able to make.

Yet. :001_cool:

So that's my last shave of the decade. I'd say I'm going out on a high note. :thumbup1:

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY THE SOTD CREW!:biggrin1::biggrin1::biggrin1::biggrin1: It's been real, it's been fun—and it's been real fun. Here's to more of it in the new year and the new decade.

Excellent shave to end the year. The Sharks are very nice blades - sharp and decently smooth. The Avon asb is quickly becoming my go-to balm - Nivea is collecting dust. At $1.99 a tube when on sale the Avon balm may just be the best deal in shaving, IMO.

Thanks for the great post!

What is the Myersol ASL like, and where can it be found?

Myrsol ASL i like Spanish Floid, but a bit more mentholated and with scent more sweet,...it's being selled only to hairdressers and some stores, as
http://www.casa-rodriguez.com/index.php?ver=productos&secc=1&id=299, but the size is 1liter, more than 30 fl. oz. We bought a bottle among some spanish wetshavers and divide it in decants of 100 ml. and that I have now.

Myrsol emulsion is a preshave and aftershave balm but thicker than other balms as proraso or nivea, contains menthol, but the scent is sweet,....it works very well it's popular in Spain among the wetshavers because it performs very well and is easier to find than other products as proraso or T&H,.....you can buy it in Spanish hairdressers, and in http://www.casa-rodriguez.com/index.php?ver=detalles&secc=1&prod=11743

But if you have the proraso pre-post or you don't like the preshave products it's fine, I think that it's more important to well build lather

A fine shave this morning, to end the decade:

British Flare-tip Rocket / Shark (day 3) / Semogue 1305 boar / C&E Sweet Almond Oil SC / Thayer's / Aqua Velva Ice Blue AS / Nivea ASB / L'Occitane Vetyver cologne

The SAO cream has been lurking in the back of my den for a while. I traded a bowl of Tabac for it when I first started this journey, and my face was always burning. I blamed it on the shave products I was using, and not my novice technique. Two years on, and I can say that this is (was) a wonderful product, and its a real shame it has been discontinued.

Happy New Year to all here on B&B.

Dick

I hate to be the one to spoil your fun, but the decade doesn't end for another year yet, technically, since the year 2000 was the last year of the last millenium and 2001 was the first year of this one (and also the first year of this decade).

I always look at all your posts and want to thank you all, I really admire you for your fantastic Pictures

I prepared by having a shower, after I select what I want to use "I have alot of soaps, creams, fragrances ect..." I then get some pure teatree oil, rub 3 drops into my hands and then onto my facial hair and shaving zone... after I put a hot towel over my face not too hot though, as the towel cools down on my face, I prepare a good ceamy wet lather.

Brush: badger hair, cost around $30, works for me and I like it.
Razor: Dovo Special
Soap: Geo F Trumper, Sandalwood.
Moisturizer: Geo F Trumper, Coral Skin Food
Fragrance: Dior Homme Eau Sauvage "Fraicheur Cuir"

Tonight Im wearing Thierry Mugler Pure Malt Wisky

No razor bumps, burns, nicks or anything and I have to thanks teatree oil for this, It really helps alot and gives your face a cool feel after shaving.

Took out the straight thismorning and took my time, this setup works really well, especially if I take my time lol

Two good passes with the Luna Deluxe and great lather with the Coates and I get a decent shave for New Year's Eve. I have difficulty getting a very close shave on the neck and chin area with my straights but I decided against a DE touch up for no good reason. I think I am improving on my stropping technique, however, and this razor, honed by Lynn Abrams, benefited from 100 laps on the strop and felt great. Decided to go for the Avon Derek Jeter endorsed Driven Warm Cedarwood Edt which is not unlike the Carrera 212 or the Dirty English.

I hope all have a happy and healthy New Year in 2010.

Good question, i was thinking this one:

http://www.casa-rodriguez.com/prodimages/10660.jpg

The "rojo" or red, is like Floïd, I like it, the "azul" or blue is aqua velva type, fresher than rojo.

Men-Ü Syntetico Bristle
Merkur 33C+Feather
TSD Bourbon vanilla SC
TSD Bourbon vanilla ASB

My trvel kit sucks! the menÜ Sintetico is worst than the menÜ boar bristle, stiffer, and it does not retains water.....but it can make lather,.....I have a year to improve my shave.

Thanks to all of my SOTD friends - who'dathunk I'd ever be taking pictures of my shave gear, daily - and sharing it with gentlemen from all over the world. And then waiting with eagerness to see what their daily shaves would be.

Pretty weird.

So thank you, SOTD, for an interesting and fun 2009 - I expect the next year will be even better!

Happy New Year.

My first shave of the year (01-01-10).

Soap from Alepo in the shower - Semogue LE 2009 Brush 2º use - Vintage Merkur Slant Bar 2º use - Feather #2 - Pre Proraso - TABAC - Alum block - ASB La Toja+ ASL Brumel.

http://i661.photobucket.com/albums/uu335/SlowShaving/Afeitado/Afeitado01-01-10005.jpg

A spectacular shave. The TABAC + Semogue LE combination is unbeatable. I've gotten a wet, creamy, persistent ,soft... leather. Wonderfully. I really believe that the leather has been the best of all my life.

A question: What soap's label do you prefer, TABAC or MItchell Wool Fat Soap?

I'm going to love the Merkur Slant Bar.

The ASL Brumel really works very well.

A DFS to start the new year...using a straight always reminds me to be in the moment...all of a sudden a small nick appears and I never even felt it...finished up with the Tech/Feather combo and celebrated the new decade with the C&S.

A quote from Neil Gaiman:

"...I hope you will have a wonderful year, that you'll dream dangerously and outrageously, that you'll make something that didn't exist before you made it, that you will be loved and that you will be liked, and that you will have people to love and to like in return. And, most importantly (because I think there should be more kindness and more wisdom in the world right now), that you will, when you need to be, be wise, and that you will always be kind."

Long, leisurely New Year's Day Shave

Hardware: Gillette Fat-Handled Tech w/Derby blade, White Fang (Superior 25mm SBB, aka, Hammer of the Gods, #1), Weller bowl

Software: Dave's Mystic Lavender Glycerin Preshave, Trumper's Rose SC, witch hazel, Calvin Klein's Euphoria ASB

I like to save the Trumper's for a special occasion. The rose scent to much like a sniffing a rose from the garden.

WOW That Semogue brush looks very well broken in after 2 shaves! My brother's Omega boar looks nothing like it after 15 uses!!!

In regards to your question: I prefer MWF over Tabac any day of the week but Tabac is a great soap too.

Thanks for your advice; I'll go for the MWF sortly.

The brush has been soaking - lathering - drying tree times (without hairdryer) and has two true shaves. It's amazing!

I haven't posted here in the SOTD in quite some time, but I had a particularly great first shave of 2010. I thought I'd share. No work today, so I was able to sleep in and have a leisurely shave instead of rushing because of over sleeping or something.

Gillette New (an old, ugly one, but a great shaver) / Feather blade / TOBS Almond / Vulfix 660 small, premium BB / Floid Blue / a little 444 ASB to touch up one, small spot of irritation on my neck

Decent shave - but the VDH didnt seem as protective as the tallow soaps I've been using the past few weeks.

Two passes, DFS, if not BBS. Thought I would have to do a touchup later for the evening, but made it through the night! Must have been that presoak in the swimming pool.

Not sure whether I'll shave today. If I do, it'll be to see if one more shave can be had from the dregs of that can of Old Spice.

How did the vintage MacGregor soap perform?

this was my first try with the MacGregor - I thought it was a loser initially (or that I was the loser). I got a LOT of very light dry lather... adding more water didn't seem to improve anything.

I added more soap to the brush, dumped off excess water from the bowl - and more or less face lathered. THAT was the ticket! Loads of lather, still some lavender scent to the soap - all in all it worked VERY well. I might have done better with a softer brush - the Duke is pretty dense & scrubby.

I suggest that NOBODY else buy this soap if he sees it. Nope. Don't do it. (Leave it for me!)

Today's shave: not too bad, still finding the tough spots. I had some issues yesterday so I was very ginger about under my chin so no ATG there so that could have something to do with the new rough spots. Lather was good but had to go back to the soap every pass, wish I could make enough for the whole 9 yards.

Overall, a good and close shave.

first shave with this Toggle from WhosYerBob (thanks, Mitch! - thanks, B&B) - and the first shave in awhile with the QED B&B - what a great soap... and it pairs perfectly (to my geezish schnozz) with the Special Reserve. Maybe a mist or too (mistertwo?) of Caron Yatagan after.

todays shave was bloody... I have a mole on my chin and I cut it off again, need to get me some WH. I tried a trick somebody mentioned in the chat; spraying some cologne on the soap before I lather. It worked a bit but by the time it was on my face I could't smell it anymore. Anyhow still suffering from some minor irritation under my chin. Lather was very moist today and I finally made enough to do 3 passes. I about burnt my hand on the tap water during that little endeavor. Wish I had a scuttle.

A really lovely, soothing shave. A few times I reached the point where I felt the blade was just "wiping the whiskers off," a phrase IIRC another new-comer to straights used here recently. It's an under-appreciated, not-much-commented upon ability of straights to provide not just the closest shaves, but also the most comfortable and gentlest of shaves. Then again, you have to acquire the technique for them to give that up to you....

Nice photos, as always, Gentlemen!

Rob is obviously taking a rosy outlook for the New Year.
Jon -- glad you like your new toggle!
Eelco -- you must be glad to be home from Orlando and back with your complete collection of St. John's!!

This is my late Sunday morning shave:

http://i960.photobucket.com/albums/ae85/strat1117/100103007.jpg

Moss Scuttle
Afzelia Burl Handle (CooncatBob), sporting the comb from an old Muhle R89 and a Merkur cap
7 O'Clock Yellow
Plisson #12 EW
CADE SS
CADE AS Splash
CADE ASB
Thayer's astringent WH w/ Aloe Vera

This was an astonishingly good shave. It should be no surprise that the CADE and the Plisson play so nicely together, but the "Frankenrazor" really worked well. The old style Muhle R89 was simply too aggressive, and too inconsistent -- it took a lot of effort and attention to get the blade centered. In a different thread, Luc showed me that the new heads solved the problem with a slightly different configuration to the cap, more like a Merkur. I happened to have an extra Merkur head around, I tried it, and it worked!! It won't fit the original Muhle handle, but it fits the CooncatBob Afzelia burl perfectly. Most importantly, I got a great shave today. The monster has been tamed!! :w00t:

Now I have to figure out what to call it. Perhaps "Thrunobulax" would work?
