Anyone get a gun for Christmas? Or accessory? Or ammo? I got a few $$$ to add to the ammo stockpile!

I got a small safe for my pistol. I was wanting something with an electronic keypad, and I got it today. Now I need to secure it and get my pistol in it away from the kids...I have been keeping it locked in a fireproof safe that required a key, not very easy to get to in an emergency.

I got a hat just like my dad and brother, so in order to pose for pictures we went up into the attic and pulled down the 98k and civil war rifles to get the good pose. Found a 3-sided bayonet as well as some billy clubs. The pictures came out great...

I received 100 rds. of .40 S&W. I will put this to good use.:biggrin1:

I got my son a new Columbia upland vest and some shot shells. He can't wait to get home and head out after some rabbits.

As an aside, are any of you still having trouble finding .45 ACP rounds? Around here, center fire pistol ammo is trickling back in except .45.

azmark

.45's are going to be gone for a while. I felt like a jerk but I went to 4 gun shows and bought every .45 I could find and stored them. You never know when we'll come under attack by zombies.:001_tongu

I was given my great grandfather's octagon-barrelled Winchester .32 Special, circa 1903. Also, a photo of my grandfather and great grandfather with the rifle after a successful deer hunt, circa 1944. Pretty cool.

I hope I have enough ammo to last the rest of my life!

I have 5000 rounds of Chinese and East German surplus AKM ammo for the Maadi and around 1200 rounds of mostly Yugoslavian 8mm for the k98. I haven't fired a round in five or six years and don't hunt. I only keep my weapons for self defense, in case civilization collapses or another revolution occurs so HOPEFULLY it is enough? If I have fired 6200 rounds and am still alive something is wrong!! :biggrin1:

Having a dozen firearms, and thousands of rounds of ammo, I opted for a Kindle this year.:biggrin1:

Nice score! Make sure you think carefully about where you are going to place it. That safe probably weighs 600lbs.

It took 6 guys to move my safe in my house recently when we moved a few months ago. Literally had to move it 6 inches over the threshold and 20 feet and another 4 inches on a pedestal. Took about 4 hours

Yup, that's why I posted the warning. I had two this size in my basement at one time.

Did you get imprints from the weight?

My sunk in the carpet and a few mm in the concrete slab.

But hey when you have friends and neighbors that work for beer and buffalo wings, anything can be done.

According to the manufacturer it weighs in at a hefty 830 pounds. I'm going to rent a piano dolly to bring it into the house with, then I'm setting it on a piece of 1" plywood in the utility room to spread the weight around...

It's rated at 1400 degrees for 70 minutes, so it should last long enough for our house to totally burn down around it before there's any damage. We don't have a very big house...

I didn't have any damage, but I've known many who did. I actually had mine on a concrete platform I poured on a concrete floor in the workshop (unfinished part of the basement). Luckily govt contracted movers had to take it out when we left.

I would at least not put a few rounds through those guns every now and again to keep up on shooting skills. 6200 rounds of ammo will do you no good if you can't hit the broad side of a barn. Or you've found that your firing pin on the k98 has malfunctioned. The AK is probably ok but you would be substantially more successful and accurate if you practiced more.

the immortal line, they'll have to pull the guns from my cold dead hands comes to mind.

May I respectfully suggest that you might be better served by using a bit more tactful phrasing here?

Got a Mossberg Maverick 88, 12 gauge shotgun for myself. Received the 18.5 inch barrel as a cool accessory. One barrel for skeet/hunting, one for home defense/zombies.

I am confident in my ability to hit a target with a rifle even after a few years of downtime. Thank you for your concern. As to my rifles functioning both Maadi and k98k are in excellent condition and the designs are not reputed to be fragile.

Sorry, I changed it. Always get a little passionate about people who "stock up" on weapons then don't practice with them, expecting them to function perfectly when needed.

You are correct about the robustness of both designs but especially the Mauser will need a little TLC every now and again.

Oh I disassemble my weapons every few months and clean/oil/inspect them.
If a SHTF situation ever breaks out it would be likely an unarmed friend/neighbor getting the k98 and it's gear anyways. While it is a brilliant design and the backbone of a World War and countless other conflicts around the globe I wouldn't feel that comfortable with a bolt gun as my main piece of equipment. It never hurts to have one in reserve though.

Thank you. I understand your passion, though. I am a gunsmith/firearms instructor. Accuracy with a long or short arm is a perishable skill so I see what your point was. That said, I'm sure if the OP is well experienced with his weapons he may in fact be able to go long periods of time without practice and still be more accurate than the average person. Is he going to be hitting targets at 1K meters, no but could he defend his family if need be, probably.

Thanks for the edit of your post.

I got some reloading supplies for my shotgun, but that was it in the gun category for this year.

Although, a month or two ago my parents passed to me my grandfather's WWII issued 1911A1. It's in remarkably good shape for its age. I almost (almost) wish it was a bit rougher around the edges because right now it's a real collector's piece. I feel bad shooting it. Not that .45 acp ammo is easy to find right now.

Don't try to restore it or clean it up. It will make it worthless as an antique or collectors piece. That is a cool gun.

I cleaned it with Hoppe's and Rem Oil to prevent any further deterioration. I do not intend to do anything like try to strip the parkerization, and I certainly wouldn't do anything like butcher it for new sights or anything like that.

The only "incorrect" piece is the barrel is a WWII vintage Colt barrel instead of the proper barrel (the pistol is a Remington Rand). However, my grandfather would not have replaced it himself, so this was a military replacement during the war (probably before it was even issued to him because as far as I know he never fired it outside of training). Thus, to my mind the barrel is "correct." I have had offers to trade the barrel for one that would match, but I'm not sure I would actually be improving anything by doing so.

Heck no. Bought it when I was a cop from another cop who was a marksmen. I tagged a headshot 600yds last year with a spotter. I switched from a Leupold to a Schmidt & Bender. It is awesome in low light.

The team next to me was shooting a Barrett .50cal. They were punching holes the size of tennis balls in engine blocks.

My wife's uncle has a 1944 Smith Corona M1903 he wants to trade away for an assault rifle!! I am negotiating a price with him so we can keep it in the family. His dad got the rifle as a surplus purchase, encased in grease from some depot. It's a beautiful firearm in great condition.

I got a couple boxes of 12ga 000 buck for 2 legged vermin, a box of .303 Brit ammo, and 200 primers (I was almost out and they are hard to find around here), and a box of .38 Super. Current armory is small Remington 870, Winchester 1400 12ga, Enfield No.4 mk I .303 Brit, and a Colt 1911 Commander in .38 super (circa 1974). All of these have been passed down to me from family members.
