I truly enjoyed this one.
The razor's debut: immediately joined the top of my rotation (and not because of the pretty MOP inlay) Smooth smooth steel. Beauty and function, both razor and brush.

Got a reasonably good shave today, was in a bit of a rush so I didn't take the time to get all the nooks and crannies that well. Tried out the barbasol brushless for the first time today (thanks Scotto)... I don't think it'll become part of my regular rotation. The scent was too strong for me and while not a bad scent, just not one that a love or even really like that much. And, the barbasol seemed to leave a film/residue on my face which required more than a rinse to remove.

A nice, smooth shave but it took a fourth pass and some touch ups in the typical problem areas. The 4/8 is much lighter than the 5/8 and 6/8 straights I'm use to so it requires a bit of extra pressure to muscle through the areas of thickest whiskers. I did, however, get the best lather yet this morning: Instead of soaking the soap while prepping, I worked the puck dry with a damp brush - 15 swirls and the lather EXPLODED in my mug! I'll be working my lather like this from now on .

I'm still getting to grips with the Gillette Blade and after the Derby's set on 1.5 I think the Gillette blade requires a setting of 2. After my first 22 consecutive DE shaves I can at last judge if the shave is going ok or not and adjust either the blade/cream/pressure part thru. I havn't nicked myself for 5 straight shaves and get a great shave everyday. My skin is so much better than it was using those dreadful Mach 3's.

Today's shave was as good as the last, several leagues better than anything to date. But all the hardware and software is different. A really great shave (as near as BBS as I care to be at the moment, BBS=>ingrown hairs for me.) Not sure if it is Scotto's advice to use more cream/soap (I have so much that I am not afraid of running out in the next few years) or shaving with a sink of hot water rather than a running tap (so I can also hear the shave for feedback.) Whatever it is, I'm loving these shaves...

Well The Menthol Derby smells typical Turka what that is well if you know Arko you know what I mean, suprisingly smell is ok a bit medicinical but not too clinical. Lubrication is good ,protection is good ,moist. is good. Menthol ????
The only Menthol in this cream is on the package !
For all you Menthol freaks out there this is NOT your cream No cooling whatsoever ZERO ,you need Ingram if you want cooling or proraso Green with Eucalyptos oil.
Does the world need another cream like this ? Id say no , Arko is already filling that spot in short its a BORING cream....I used quite a lot of cream to hope see the lather explode didnt happen. Latherd up waited 3 minutes.ok the cream does hold ! doesnt evaporate or thin out.

The Trumper A/S is very nice (if you like alcohol-based splashes), and it is a great double-hit of fern goodness with the EdT. As for coconut and fern - don't knock it 'till you try it.

1st pass with Derby Lavender cream. I am not impressed by the scent: it reminds me of a household cleaner. I hope the other Derby creams, that I also bought, have a scent that is more to my taste. The lather was Ok, but I prefer the performance of the other Turkish creams, the Arkos.
Did two more passes with Tryphon Alpino soap, fresh and soothing effect on my skin.

That Pre de Provence cream is some crappy crap. It acted more like my Caswell-Massey almond cream than any normal cream. Had to use over 2 inches of cream, big fat lines, and still had a thin, bubbly lather. The soap, from what I hear, is the best thing since sliced bread. They REALLY need to re-visit their cream, however.
On a good note, my face feels like SubZero (from Mortal Kombat) and Mr. Freeze (from Batman) had an Armageddon war on my face.
And they both won.

That Pre de Provence cream is some crappy crap.
I remember reading from a couple guys here (I think Ron and Scotto) that the stuff is loaded with Shea Butter so it won't give you the same type of lather you may be used to. That being said it is supposed to be pretty slick. Maybe someone else will chime in, since I don't have any first hand experience with it.

Haha welcome aboard Tim ..very nice pic. I just put stuff down, aim and shoot. I have no clue what '60MM F/8 1/20 Sec Aperture Priority Mode' means!?? Also how do you put the little badgerandblade.com signature in the corner of the photo??
Clueless but trying too. David
David,
To get the "badgerandblade.com" stamping on the photo, you must upload it to the gallery, here is an excerpt from Jerry's Post (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=2474) on taking and uploading SOTD pictures.....
Uploading your images
Once you have your image downloaded to your computer, you’ll need to upload it to the B&B gallery. Remember where you saved your image to on your computer so you will be able to find it. On the B&B site, click on the gallery button and it will take you to a page where you will need to enter the information for your image. Click the Browse button and locate your image on your hard drive, double click it, and the link will be added to the page. Further down the page is a you will be prompted to name your image. If it’s my SOTD, I’ll use the date as my title. If you like, you can enter a description of your image as well but I normally don’t. Next, you’ll be asked to choose a category. It should either be SOTD or Member’s Category. Choose one and click submit. Your image has now been uploaded to the gallery. Find your image in the gallery, left click on the picture and it will launch a larger version of your image as well as a few other fields below the image. Find the field that says “BB Image Code”. Highlight the link to the right by clicking and dragging across it, then right click and choose copy. Once you get to the place in your post where you would like the image to appear, right click, and choose paste. And there you have it!

I remember reading from a couple guys here (I think Ron and Scotto) that the stuff is loaded with Shea Butter so it won't give you the same type of lather you may be used to. That being said it is supposed to be pretty slick. Maybe someone else will chime in, since I don't have any first hand experience with it.
well, it was extremely slick... I should have put that in my original post. The slickness I didn't have a problem with. It was just so thin, I could see most of my face through the lather. That, and it took an exorbitant amount of cream to generate lather that I was comfortable with. I do agree that it was very, very slick. The shave itself was good... perhaps this cream just needs (a LOT) more of the actual cream to make something that I can work with. I'm sure it's a "My Mileage May Vary" kind of thing.
I looked up some feedback on it in various posts, and the general word was this makes a lighter, airier lather than the traditional 3T's. I would agree with the light, airy description. I guess maybe I'm just too used to seeing a thicker lather on my face, and using much smaller portions.

Gotcha...I guess like with any new cream you might have to fiddle with the cream/water ratio to find out what works best. Especially since it seems to be a bit different from the other creams we use.

The PrP cream is universally panned. I think Kyle has a link around here somewhere. The soap, on the other hand, is a very good product.

Feeling rough today, last night at work and got all confused so I made a mistake:
* Derby lavender shaving cream
* C&E (EJ) Travel shave brush
* Gillette Mach 3 Power
* King of Shaves after shave gel (a blue one with bits in it)
Three passes. Dull as dishwater experience. Half an hour later I now wish I did it properly!
The Derby cream was alright, the smell was a bit like old-ladies soap or some sort of candy. Took a bit of effort to lather and lubricated ok.
The M3 was a real effort to use. Blunt as my grandmother's kitchen knife. Zero pressure does not work for these devices. Then you apply pressure and you feel your face getting red raw. So you compromise with a tiny bit of pressure and multiple passes. It was just strangely too much effort to do this.
The King of Shaves gel works well with the M3 lubrication strip though. I'd started to always leave it in the cupboard as it was icky after a real shave, but it was good today.
Lesson -- through M3 in bin with KOS gel.
Post-script -- could have been worse, found the philishave buried deep in a box today.
First shave in 3 days (decided to give my face a rest to heal razor burn and see growth patterns) and I'm pretty satisfied with myself.

I actually reduced the amount of razor burn on the sides of my mouth. And when I fnished I saw no nicks, but later on I saw a tiny dab of blood on my moustache.
Overall, I had a great, close 4 pass shave, and I found the blade that I'll be improving my technique with  .

Great shave tonight, nice and smooth and I can still smell just a hint of the Cavendish black ... oh yes, it's nice . It reminds me a bit of TGQ's Bay Rum w/ Sweet Orange but with a twist of lingering smoke and it's a little stronger in scent. If you like Bay Rum I think you'd like Cavendish Black.
I was also pleasantly surprised with the Merkur blade. After reading so many dissatisfied user reports I didn't expect much from it but, judging strictly from the initial use, I'd say on par it works for me as well as the Israeli Personna blades.

Holy cow... what high praise.
I was actually a little disappointed I was unable to get the head of the razor in focus, but I thought it was more important to get that middle depth focused since the handle design is what distinguishes the Parkers and I wanted to have the refelction & background enough in focus that you could tell what it was. Jerry, you seem to keep the entire depth of field in focus really nicely... any tips? (Feel free to answer me in the Darkroom thread)

A great BBS shave today!
I started with the Menthol Derby cream. I want to like these creams: I am a fan of the Arkos, which are also low cost creams from Turkey. I must say that the scent of the Menthol cream is, to me, much more pleasant than the Lavender, which I tried yesterday, although I can smell no menthol in it at all. Altogether, it is a lovely, light scent. The cream lathered well, but I found that its lubrication was insufficient for my heavy beard. It may be fine for others, YMMV, as always. The razor tugged when I started using it (on my chin): I switched to Alpino soap and it glided smoothly across my face. I finished with two more passes with the Alpino.
I used a 1960 Gillette SS with a new Derby blade (I love Derby blades!). Followed with Afta AS balm (Cheap and effective) and shampooed with NancyBoy shampoo, which I found complemented the Alpino shave soap quite well.
End result, a super smooth shave with no nicks. Very comfortable.

Jim, I have only used the soap a few times, but for my money any of the french soaps would blow the Gold Dachs out of the water, and would be more cost effective while doing so.

As a side note, I am really in awe of how nice the SOTD pics have been getting. I think as a collective, a lot of members are getting interested in photography, which isnt necessarily bad. If you cant take good pictures (I cant) dont feel bad. If I had a digital camera, I'd be posting my crappy pics that I have to doctor for 30 minutes in Photoshop to make look decent.
Plus, all of these great photos are going to look awesome in my book!!
