since the b&b brush will be my first real good brush, what are the steps, if any, to take to get the brush ready for my (its) first shave?

Hi;

For new brushes, I usually soak and rinse in a solution of borax and water. That cleans the brush up very well and helps to eliminate the smell that sometimes accompanies a new brush. No other maintenance really, use and enjoy!

The borax and water rinse is the way to go. Then a few days of regular use and any badger smell will be gone!

Maybe a little shampoo and conditioner? It might not smell at all. It chould be clean and ready for use. I've never tried the borax route personally.

I just grab some great creams and go to it! I rinse it and swirl it in a bowl of water and lather away. I just broke in my SMF III that way and never had a bit of smell from it. I think the smell comes mostly from the boar brushes. Not the badger ones. So I would say just lather up a test batch and rinse it from there and keep lathering away!

Put a dab of shampoo in the bottom of your shave bowl and whip it up like you would your shave creme-it will look a lot like shave creme. Then work the concentrated shampoo into the brush, then fill the bowl with hot water and let soak-I do this once a week to just clean my brush:wink2: .

You know, funny you should mention this.... I don't remember the b&b brushes having any sort of nasty badger scent to them during their first use. I just grabbed 'em and started using 'em.

You could do all of the above recommendations.... but none MUST be done.

Personally - I have never "prepped" a brush - just stuck it in the cream or soap - and went to town. :smile:

What does everyone think about adding hair conditioner for making an aging brush softer?

The only brush I ever had to 'prep' (de-stink is more accurate) was the Proraso Omega Boar... that is one nasty smelling sucker to start with!

Usually I prep a brush by putting cream or soap on it, lathering, and then I remove the lather, usually by applying it to my face. Once there, I find an efficient way to remove the lather from my face is with a blade.
